When putting together this trip we had the option to fly to Zanzibar but decided to take a chance and go by ferry as a way to experience the journey differently and be closer to how locals make this trip. It lived up to the bill but ofcourse we had Aqeel and team with us every step of the way. Can't wait for our return to the mainland in a couple of days.
A ferry ticket and transport to the terminal may not seem that big of a deal, but it would have been an entirely different experience if I’d done it on my own. The ferry terminal is organized chaos, so having Aqeel there to help was huge. Also, a gold ticket made the time on the ferry much more comfortable. Once again Viator comes through!
Boat was very nice, the trip was pleasant. But it doesn’t matter. The experience on the harbour prior to the journey was a stressful nightmare. The porters are awful, impolite and expensive. Do yourself a favor and fly to Zanzibar, avoid the boat at all cost.
Some feedback from our ferry adventure of April 8 from Dar to Zanzibar. Your agent came our hotel at 9:20 for a 9:30 departure. He then had the driver go the wrong way on a one way road to get us to the ferry on time, which was very unsafe. And then he did nothing to help with our bags and to facilitate us getting on to the ferry in a vert chaotic situation. We would have been better off taking a taxi. This was unnecessary stress and really not acceptable. The guy you greeted us on the island, on the other hand, was waiting for us and was very helpful. Also the face value of the ticket was $35/person and I paid $120 purchasing online! For what? Paid more than 3 times the price and not only did we receive no service, it detracted from the whole experience.
A fabulous, once-in-a-lifetime, too-short-of-a-trip. Loved the people and their traditions and beliefs. Couldn't have done this without my highly-qualified and highly recommended tour guide Aquelabaas and his assistants.

The Ferry trip from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar was smooth, but…. the porters were extremely pushy and required tip., more than I anticipated giving them and asked if I had more to give.. excuse me sir🙄🤬. My husband was so done and didn’t even need help with our luggage and only agreed to allowed them to port for us, in an effort to allow them to make a few dollars..
I’ve never been on a high speed ferry, so I was surprised at how fast it was going. At one point it was rocking quite a bit, so be prepared with Dramamine if you need it. They also hand out sick bags. They have bathrooms and refreshments on board. If you sit on the front deck you may get wet. The business class seats look a little more comfortable than economy but in my opinion economy is just fine.
The pick up from my hotel was excellent and the driver was very good. But the bad experience came when trying to board the ferry. Everyone was just pushing and shoving their way with no form of organization. The people who own, operate and run that business needs to do better. Exiting the ferry was just as bad.
The crossing was quite ok. What I struggle with, when you search for prices on the Internet, is crazy expensive offers are sold here. I wonder what to buy a VIP ticket for for about 2 hours. Someone here is prizing on Mozungu (white man). I paid a fraction of it at the counter. So buy tickets on the spot and take a close look.
For me the ferry is a good way to travel from Dar to Zanzibar. It gives a nice view of the Dar shore and in Zanzibar you litterly arrive in the centre of Stone Town. BUT be aware, going from Zanzibar to Dar is a little nightmare for me.. The sea us rough and a lot of people get seasick including myself. The service of the ferry is good though. No complaints there, although it is recommanded to bring a jacket or sweater on the boat cause the AC is standing on Freezer mode.
