Elephanta-grottorna ligger i västra Indien på Elephanta Island (även kallad ön Gharapuri), som framhäver två kullar isolerade av en tät dal. Den lilla ön är täckt av olika gamla arkeologiska kvarvarande delar som är de enda förklaringarna till dess rika sociala förflutna. De stenhuggna Elephanta-grottorna byggdes i mitten av femte till sjätte hundratals år e.Kr. Den mest betydelsefulla bland grottorna är den ojämförliga grottan 1, som uppskattar 39 meter från den främre ingången till baksidan. I plan ser denna grotta i den västra sluttningen intensivt ut som Dumar Lena-grottan i Ellora, i Indien. Grottans huvudkropp, med undantag för verandorna på de tre öppna sidorna och den bakre passagen, är 27 meter i kvadrat och upprätthålls av linjer med sex sektioner vardera. Elephantagrottorna är en UNESCO:s världsarvslista.

Elephanta Caves är en UNESCO: s världsarvslista och en samling av grottatempel främst tillägnad den hinduiska guden Shiva. De ligger på Elephanta Island, eller Gharapuri (bokstavligen "grottans stad") i Mumbai hamn, 10 kilometer öster om staden Mumbai i den indiska delstaten Mahārāshtra. Ön, belägen offshore cirka 2 kilometer väster om Jawaharlal Nehru hamn, består av fem hinduiska grottor och några buddhistiska stupahögar som går tillbaka till 2000-talet f. This was our first tour in Mumbai and it was a lovely experience. Shruti met us at the meeting point on time and made sure we had water before going in the boat. On arrival we met Manoj, a local who has lived on the island his whole life. He made sure we were looked after and even bought us some local lemon juice (sweet and salty). Manoj was very informative and got us into the caves hassle free! Crowd wasn’t too bad but we went during monsoon season and were lucky to get across!

Shruti and Manoj were amazing!! They gave us so much local knowledge including pointing out interesting places and facts on the journey over and the incredible information on the statues that Manoj provided. He even encouraged us to try a sweet and salty lemon drink before heading up which I'd massively recommend!
