Vi utgår från Roms historiska stadsdel, som kallas Borgo. Guiden kommer att göra en introduktion till Vatikanstaten och visa dig hemliga passager av påven.
Petersplatsen i är en av de mest kända (och säkerligen en av de heligaste!) sevärdheterna i världen. Det ritades på 1600-talet av Gian Lorenzo Bernini, som var känd som den mest skickliga arkitekten i Rom på den tiden. Påven Alexander VIII, som beställde piazzan, bad Bernini att betona Peters betydelse som "porten till himlen" och arkitekten genomförde begäran på ett vackert sätt. Han delade upp torget i ett mindre trapetsformat område som gränsar till basilikan och en oval huvuddel, som tillsammans skapar en grundplan i form av ett gigantiskt nyckelhål.

Känd under ett antal namn, Vatikanens kryptor, Vatikanens Grottoes, eller den catchy "Vatacombs", är detta den enorma underjordiska kyrkogården nedanför Peterskyrkan som rymmer de helgade gravar av olika påvar, martyrer, kungar och andra trogna som den centrala kyrkan i katolicismen har samlat under sina årtusenden av historia. Du kan även se några kolonner av den ursprungliga Peterskyrkan som byggdes av kejsar Konstantin på 300-talet e.Kr.

When my wife and I were planning our "bucket list" trip to Rome the top of our to do list was a visit to The Vatican. Having looked at many options for guided tours we came across the What a Life Tours "Best of the Best " 3 hour small group tour which seemed to fit everything we wanted to do - skip the queues, visit the Vatican museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peters Basilica. Elaine, our friendly and amusing guide, shared her wide ranging knowledge of the Vatican's history and treasures in a way that was informative without being overpowering, all the time guiding us through the crowds and getting us to the most advantageous viewing points to fully appreciate the splendour and intricacies of the architecture, artwork and sculptures of all 3 buildings. Eduardo was a fantastic guide for our family of four including two older teenagers. He was knowledgeable, interesting and easy to deal with. We had an 8.30am timeslot to beat the crowds which I would highly recommend.

Our tour was canceled right when our group was ready to leave. It was frustrating and certainly messed up our travel schedule, but the company did issue a refund the next day.
