Journey from Hell. Excellent guide but poor organisation

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this tour involved a series of organisational failures. Our guide, Angel ("with the glasses," as he introduced himself), and our driver - were friendly, patient and professional throughout an extremely difficult day. My criticism is directed at the tour operator and the way the trip was organised. Overcrowded and uncomfortable transport. 17 passengers were placed into a very small van with minimal legroom, making what was already a long day unnecessarily uncomfortable. The windows remained closed for most of the journey despite repeated requests to open them from me and other passengers. Only the window next to me was eventually opened, and that too was partially jammed. The air became stale and unpleasant and some other passengers also commented on this. Given the long periods spent in the vehicle, better ventilation should be a basic health and comfort requirement. Have any lessons been learnt from the pandemic? One passenger, sitting next to me, was travelling with a baby who cried, screamed, coughed and sneezed for much of what ultimately became a 17-hour day. The baby was clearly distressed, and while I sympathise with any parent travelling with a baby/infant, the conditions were unfair on both the baby and the other passengers. Some passengers commented that such a long trip in an overcrowded van was simply not appropriate for a baby/infant. Poor planning for basic needs. Every bathroom stop along the way required payment in coins, either to an attendant or a machine. At no point were passengers warned in advance to carry small change. This created unnecessary stress, particularly for international visitors carrying only banknotes or cards, and for older passengers. Most of us relied on the good nature of nearby shopkeepers to exchange money into coins. Return journey with no contingency planning. The return journey was where the organisation completely fell apart. Heavy rain and flooding caused severe delays, extending what should have been an 11-hour tour into almost 17 hours. The weather was obviously outside the operator's control, but the apparent lack of planning was disappointing when it was totally foreseeable in rainy season. For approx 5 hours on the return journey, there was no bathroom stop at all. Eventually, the guide arranged a stop at a gas station so passengers could use the facilities. Angel did his best in difficult circumstances, but the operator should have had procedures in place for situations that are predictable during rainy season. Passenger safety. Unfortunately, the couple sitting behind me became verbally aggressive over the position of my seat. My seat had already been reclined when I boarded the vehicle and I had not adjusted it. Instead of politely asking me to move it, the woman repeatedly kicked my seat while her partner swore at me several times. This would be a reportable offence in many countries. Angel, who acknowledged my complaint but chose not to intervene. I appreciate that he may have wished to avoid escalating the situation, but I spent the remainder of the journey feeling uncomfortable and intimidated. Tour guides should be equipped to manage conflicts between passengers and ensure everyone feels safe. The destinations themselves are worth visiting. Angel remained calm and positive throughout a very difficult day, and the driver deserves credit for navigating severe weather and getting everyone safely back to Mexico City. However, the overall experience suggested the operator was focused on maximising passenger numbers instead of wellbeing. Overcrowded transport, poor ventilation, inadequate planning for basic facilities, and the absence of contingency measures turned what should have been an enjoyable excursion into an exhausting ordeal.

An incredible day trip...

An incredible day trip from Mexico City! Puebla is beautiful, Cholula was fascinating, and the views of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl were spectacular. We were even lucky enough to witness Popocatépetl erupt while leaving the Great Pyramid of Cholula, a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Alfonso was a fantastic guide, knowledgeable, organized, and made sure everyone had a great day. Highly recommend this tour!

Horrible Tour - Do not go!!

The bus was too small, and I was left sitting in the very back of the bus with NO windows and no air conditioning. I got sick. The lunch was mediocre and small. Those waiters always press to buy drinks. I brought my own, but he told us that we could not drink our own drinks; only drinks from there could be drunk. So, we just waited till after we ate, stood up, and drank our drinks there. Idiots! Stupid, greedy tours! And they ALL want tips, tips, tips. Then, back on that horrible little bus.

WARNING!! DO NOT GO!!!

DO NOT TAKE THIS TOUR!!! This was the worst tour I have ever taken. The bus was WAY too small. I was stuck in the very back, 1 person, with no windows and the inadequate air-conditioned air not reaching the back of the bus. The roads were so bad I spent the entire trip bouncing all around, finally getting sick. Since I was in a space that felt like a coffin, the only thing I could do for the rides to each location was to lay down and go to sleep, and the seats were very uncomfortable. The group should have gotten a larger bus, but the entire operation was lazy and did not care to do anything about anything. The tour guide was WEAK. She was not experienced and did not know about customer service and care. Lunch was good but for the amount that I paid, it should have been larger. The time in Puebla was not enough time and it left us for wanting more. Anyway, I'm glad that that tour is finished and it was horrible. A total waste of time. DO NOT GO!! Go on your own or hire a private driver.

Great tour, Fantastic guide

We really enjoyed our tour of Cholula, Tonantzitla, and Puebla. Our tour guide, Mariana, was fantastic. Cholula offers a 360 degree view of the whole area. We were fortunate to see both volcanoes. The church at Tonantzitla is fascinating, particularly in its blend of indigenous and Spanish art. The Centro of Puebla is enjoyable to walk around, and there's a ton to see. The restaurant for the optional lunch was excellent. Get the mole. The driver was great too. The only downside to the trip is that these sites are around 2.5 hours from Mexico City and it can take more time to reach them in the ever-present traffic. In our case, we felt it was worth it. This was a great intro to the area and makes us want to go back and spend more time there.
