A fun day!

Great experience! There was an error in our booking with regards to the day of tour and they were able to fix it even during after hours. All the guides were great! Jose Luis and Charlie were knowledgeable and funny to keep us going through the hot tiring day. They made sure we were hydrated with bottled water and a nice cocktail/mocktail. Kudos to Gutierrez for all that driving and Christian for keeping us all on track! We started our day in Valladolid, followed by lunch. Then stopped at Chichen Itza followed by cenote. The one thing I would have preferred was to start at Chichén Itzá instead of reaching there after lunch in the peak heat hours. It’s was 95 degrees Fahrenheit! The cenote was great to cool off the heat!

Dangerous- at your own risk

It was extremely hot. One person fainted in Chechen Itza. I had an accident at the cenote and had lesions to my hip, hand and wrist. Someone was on site to disinfect and wrap some cuts. When filing the report with Selva Maya staff, they stated that previous accidents took place in the same place before. I slipped on the stairs and keep rolling down on the man made concrete stairs even with preventive water shoes.

Trip

There were hidden fees of $70 per person on top of what was already paid. ALOT of scammy sales occuring during the bus trip they took pictures without consent and then tried to sell them back to you on a bottle of liquor.

Keep searching

At the rate of $600 plus dollars for 3 adults 2 kids I wouldn't recommend. The rate you get for booking there is an additional rate per person to get on bus due to their outsourcing which is equal to the booking rate. This particular group was a bit unorganized and don't communicate with the personal they hire to do actual tour. It's not actual them, they out source. There are much better options out there, Keep looking

For barely 2 hours at the...

For barely 2 hours at the main site you will first spent over 2.5 hours collecting people from all over the region, then be given a history lesson/sales pitch on the bus, then taken to a "mayan store" where you will be forces to sit through more sales pitches from "teachers and head teachers" at the local school who also happen to be sales people at the store all day, this is also where you will have lunch where they try and sell you more fake overpriced "cultural" trinkets, then you will get on the bus again well after midday to finally head to Chichen Itza. But wait, the bus ride there is yet another way to shill you tat, this time local alcohol with a sales pitch from a random man the entire ride there. I am glad I got to see the ancient site, its a shame it took til 1.30pm to get there wasting all morning and putting us there in the absolute hottest part of the day at a site where there is no natural shade...because taking us there earlier would mean cutting out trying to force us to buy tacky souvenirs which they guilt you about being "culturally significant". After this is the cenote, again, lot of stores trying to sell you things, bus was already running late by this point, if you want to swim - you'll have to pay more. Then finally a stop on Valladolid, not to learn about the history but so they can try and force you into one last shop to buy cheap chocolate. We didnt leave the town til 7pm, and didnt get back to Playa til.10.30. Was supposed to.leave at 7am and didn't til well past 8.30 (where they made us walk from one meeting point to another). So also terrible time mamagment throughout the day, combined with wasting time trying to harrass and guilt you into buying things no one wants.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We'd like to address the points you've raised as we feel some important clarifications are needed. Regarding the pickup time, departure times vary depending on the hotel location of each passenger. Guests staying further from the main route are collected earlier, which means the bus may take some time to complete all pickups before heading to the first stop. This is standard practice for group tours covering a wide area. Regarding the Mayan village stop, this is a scheduled part of our itinerary that includes lunch and a cultural experience with the local Mayan community. Many of our guests genuinely enjoy this stop. The Mayan calendar is only made for guests who choose to fill out the form — it is never obligatory. The shaman experience is equally optional. We understand it's not for everyone, but we stand by the value this stop brings to the overall experience. Regarding the mezcal on the bus, this is an optional offer — guests are never pressured to purchase anything and are free to decline. Regarding the cenote, there is no additional charge to swim. The only cost is the mandatory life vest rental, which is clearly stated in the tour listing before booking. Regarding the chocolate shop, this is part of the Mayan village lunch stop, not a separate stop in Valladolid. Regarding the overall timing, the tour covers several remarkable destinations in a single day which does make for a full day. Accumulated time across stops and hotel pickups can extend the schedule, something we are always working to improve. We're sorry the experience didn't meet your expectations. We do our best every day to offer an authentic and enjoyable tour of the Mexican Caribbean and we take all feedback seriously. CARIBE MEX | We know the Mexican Caribbean. Now we want you to know it too. 🌴

Guided tour of Chichen Itza

Our guide Orlando was fantastic. So much knowledge and a love for the Maya people. One must see Chichen Itza at least once in their life. It is a long day, but it was worth it.

Great for Chichen Itza and swimming in the cenote.

We loved the sites of Chichen Itza and swimming in the cenote. On the other hand, the guide on the bus spoke too quickly and mixed Spanish and English in his sentences, so for non-English speakers, it was not easy to follow the explanations. Fortunately, we had an English-speaking guide who spoke more slowly and clearly for the visit to the site of Chichen Itza! It's a pity that we only had 20 minutes to stop in Valladolid, which was too short to wander through the streets... so we only had time to stay in the park and take a few photos around the park...

Experience of a lifetime!

This is a very long day. A lot of time on the bus especially towards the end when you have to drop off every passenger back to multiple resorts. Overall, this was a very incredible experience though! The first stop is at a Mayan store where they're trying to sell you items that are egregiously overpriced. I would recommend buying souvenirs at Chichen itza. This is also where you have lunch. The lunch was ok, but not for kids, particularly picky eaters. Pack a lunch for them to eat on the bus. The lunch is included, but beverages have to be purchased, even water. Time spent here was way too long. Next stop is Chichen itza was fantastic! It is very hot there and they want you to rent umbrellas for 5 bucks, but if you're from a hot state like we are in Texas, it's not a big deal. There are several vendors there trying to sell you souvenirs. I bought a few and enjoyed negotiating prices with them, lol. The pyramid and ball court were very impressive! Our tour guide, Gonzalo, was amazing! He's very knowledgeable and hysterically funny! This site is a must do! Next stop, the cenote! This was a blast! Time here was only about an hour, but between getting ready and heading down there it's about a half hour. I wish we had more time there, but was awesome nonetheless! At this point, it felt like it was time to return to the resort, but we had one more stop in a city. In my opinion, this could have been skipped in favor of more time in the cenote. Nothing special about this stop. After that it was time to take the long ride home. This excursion states it's twelve hours, however, we were picked up at 7:45 and didn't return to our resort until 11pm. So don't make dinner plans at the resort. Luckily there's a burger place at our resort that stays open until 1am. Overall, this was worth it! We truly enjoyed this and it felt like an adventure! Things to know: You will be charged about 50 US bucks per person for the Chichen itza entrance fee and some taxes before you board the bus! This is not included in the viator price. There is a lot of things trying to be sold to you almost the whole time, just pick what you want if anything. The vendors only take cash at Chichen itza. Life vests are 5 US dollars per person and are mandatory to swim in the cenote. Drinks are not included in the lunch and outside food is not permitted. If you bring something, you'll have to eat on the bus. They do stop for bathroom breaks at a convenience/ grocery store which is large. You can buy snacks here too. This place takes tap to pay so no need to bring your wallet if your phone is set for this. In closing, I would say that they should spend less time at the first stop, more time at the cenote, and cut out the last stop. The guides and staff during this excursion were fantastic and worth tipping! I love these people! Would highly recommend this trip even though it's all day!

Thank you so much Zach for this incredibly detailed review — this is exactly the kind of feedback that helps future travelers know what to expect, and we truly appreciate it! And Gonzalo is going to love reading this, we'll make sure he sees it! 😄 Regarding the Mayan village stop, we completely understand it's not everyone's favorite part of the day. Many of our guests really enjoy spending time there, getting to know the community and the culture up close — but we hear you and appreciate the honest feedback. As for Valladolid, we include it because many of our guests genuinely love ending the day in a colonial city with such a rich history. Our goal is always to offer a full experience that covers as many remarkable places as possible in a single day, so every guest gets to discover a little more of the region. Regarding the total time, you're absolutely right that the day can run longer than 12 hours depending on hotel locations and how the day's logistics unfold. We'll work on communicating this better so guests can plan accordingly — and definitely skip those dinner reservations! 😄 So happy you felt the adventure was worth it — that's everything to us. Hope to welcome you and your family back in the Mexican Caribbean soon! CARIBE MEX | We know the Mexican Caribbean. Now we want you to know it too. 🌴
