Roccaporena är en by i kommunen Cascia (varifrån det är cirka 6 kilometer), beläget mer än 700 meter högt och i en fantastisk natur. I åratal har det varit ett pilgrimsmål, eftersom det är här som Saint Rita föddes 1381, vars liv och verk hyllas här på många platser och på många olika sätt. Besök basilikan och klostret St. Rita of Cascia, St. Rita var en av de katolska kyrkans mest populära helgon, med hennes relaterade symboler som rosor och fikon. Basilikan byggdes 1937 och invigdes 1947, och klostret där hon bodde i fyrtio år byggdes om på 1800-talet och huser nonnen i det Augustinska samhället.
Ett viktigt befäst centrum för umbrerna, det var en romersk koloni och sedan en kommun (90 f.Kr.). Efter det romerska imperiets fall garnisonerades det först av Theodoric, västgoternas kung, och sedan av den bysantinska Belisarius. Erövrades av Totila, det byggdes om av de bysantinska Narses. Under den tidiga medeltiden var det huvudstad i det lombardiska hertigdömet. År 1155 erövrades och förstördes det av Federico Barbarossa och efter en rad slagsmål mellan Guelphs och Ghibellines återerövrades det av kardinal Albornoz som säkrade det för kyrkan och gjorde det till ett viktigt centrum för den påvliga staten. Stadens största monument är katedralen. Byggd i romansk stil på 1100-talet, är fasaden prydd med en stor mosaik i bysantinsk stil (1207). Inuti finns en fresk med Madonnan och heliga av Pinturicchio, bronsbysten av Urban VIII av Bernini och en extraordinär cykel av fresker av Filippo Lippi.
Rocca Alborziana en medeltida fästning, belägen på toppen av Sant'Elia-kullen med utsikt över staden Spoleto. År 1320 låstes fyrahundra guelfer in och efter två år dödades de i teaterns korridorer som fängelse. År 1395 bosatte sig de benediktinska nunnorna i Palazzo Corvi och teatern, nu under jord, blev klostrets kloster.
Spoleto, medeltida stad förblev välbevarad fram till idag. Beundra de intakta romerska portruinerna runt staden. Porta San Pietro eller Porta Monterone, i slutet av gatan med samma namn, fortfarande välbevarad, den har en dubbelbåge och är prydd med fyra högreliefer, stadens vapen.

This was a tour of a lifetime! I have always had a devotion to St Rita, and to be able to witness where she lived, was married, prayed, and died was incredibly emotional. Elizabeth was the BEST tour guide you could ask for, and Artu was a superb driver. I was solo so Elizabeth tailored the tour to my needs. She was incredibly knowledgeable and taught me so much about the area and St Rita’s life. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I would not hesitate to take this tour. It’s long and windy road and needs more energetic people to lead it . The lady was nice but she couldn’t walk because of knee issues
