Denna två timmar långa rundvandring är en djupdykning i den smutsiga historien i Five Points-kvarteren i New York, som en gång kallades "den vidriga kärnan i New Yorks slumområden" och ett område med "moralisk spetälska". På sätt och vis är det också en spöktur, eftersom vi kommer att utforska en geografi (gator och naturliga inslag) som raderas av utveckling och ombyggnad. Vi kommer att avslöja livet för de människor som bodde i detta område (nuvarande Chinatown) från 1800 - 1900, diskutera hur avloppsvatten, sex och sjukdom genomsyrade ett område fyllt med "de fattigaste av de fattiga" tills det jämnades och återuppbyggdes med början 1897. Det här är ingen tur för de svaga! Din Guide för denna tur är en examen från Sanitation Foundation's Trash Academy och har en Master of Public Administration från Columbia University. Vi kommer att diskutera hur Collect Pond förvandlades från en sötvattensdamm med en park till ett stinkande, förorenat träsk till en smutsig deponi. Här kommer vi också att diskutera Gravarna (även kallade Rättvisans salar).
Turen stannar strax öster om Columbus Park på Worth Street. Vi kommer att prata om det historiska läget och berättelserna om Paradise Square, The Old Brewery, Cow Bay, och korsningen av gatorna som gav Five Points-kvarteret sitt namn.
Turen kommer att fortsätta genom det historiska området Five Points, med stopp vid de tidigare platserna Donovan's Alley, Chatham Theatre, Chatham Square, Park Street, Mulberry Bend, Bandit's Roost och Bottle Alley. Vi ska besöka platsen för en före detta ökänd bordell och se den äldsta lägenheten i New York City. Under turen kommer vi att diskutera avloppsvatten, sex och sjukdom i Five Points från 1800 - 1900.

The "Sewage, Sex, and Sickness in the Five Points" walking tour is a fascinating deep dive into the unknown corners of what was once the most densely populated neighborhood in New York City. Learning about the trials and tribulations that immigrants had to deal with on a daily basis, gives us a new-found appreciation for social safety nets and access to healthcare. Suzanne's well-researched tour is intriguing and informative -- with irreverent humor thrown in for good measure! Highly recommended!

Susanne's tour is a delicious—and, on occasion, delightfully disgusting (hey, we're talking about 19th-century sewage here!) —journey back to 19th-century New York. Suzanne Reisman brought to life an undercounted era of New York City history. Her narration made the former Five Points district feel like a ghost landscape: a place whose streets, buildings, smells, and social conditions have largely been erased by redevelopment, but whose history still lingers beneath present-day Chinatown. By interpreting the neighborhood through sewage, sex, sickness, poverty, and survival, she allowed us to see what no longer visibly exists and to sense the human reality behind the notorious reputation of the old Five Points.
