Autentiska Sri Lankan Matlagning & Kulturupplevelse

Beskrivning

It was a fantastic experience for my whole family. Introduced by Lanka Excursions Holidays, we visited Nirosha's lovely home. She cooked a delicious home-made Sri Lankan meal, followed by an exploration of her lovely herb and spice garden and a "lesson" in the outdoor classroom to learn how to write our names in Sinhalese script. Her entire family was warm and welcoming. We truly experienced a genuine Sri Lankan home visit.
Thank you so much for this lovely review! Nirosha and I designed this visit with children especially in mind, building in moments where they could learn and explore: discovering plants in the herb and spice garden, watching and helping in the kitchen and dinner room, writing their names in Sinhalese in our private classroom, and meeting and interacting with local children. It means so much to us that the idea of a guest family visiting a home family came through so clearly for you, and that your children got to experience Sri Lanka in such a hands-on way. Thank you for letting us welcome you into our home. Nuwan & Nirosha
Our guide Nuwan brought us to his sisters home for a magical introduction to Sri Lankan cooking and culture. Nirosha and her family welcomed us into their beautiful colonial home, mossy, tropical, and surrounded by a wonderful garden filled with orchids, spices, and fruit trees. She patiently walked us through her specialties, with many ingredients picked straight from the backyard. I've never smelled cinnamon and turmeric so fragrant. The spread was incredible, our plates bursting with colour, our bellies quickly full. After a garden tour, Nirosha shared the story of her school, a centre she founded in her home to educate underprivileged children who can't afford tuition. She then sat us down at classic school desks and taught us to write our names in Sinhalese. All whilst being treated to 3 types of teas grown in her garden. We ended the day buying spices from her garden, with all proceeds going toward the school. A genuine, warm, and deeply memorable experience. If you want a real peek into local life and culture, this is a 10/10.
happy to see that you experienced the garden setting and the freshness of the ingredients in the way they are meant to be enjoyed, straight from the surroundings. She also loves reading that the introduction to Sri Lankan culture came across in a meaningful and almost magical way, as that is exactly the spirit she hopes to share. And if you remember her teachings well… feel free to come back one day to pass the exam
Nirosha welcomed us in her house as family members. She’s an amazing soul: she helps less fortunate children getting schooled and she give them classes everyday! We met the children to give them some pencils, pens and notebooks and they were so happy. She’s also an amazing cook, everything was prepared with love, cleanliness and organization. She taught us her very precious recipes and then we had dinner. The tastier dinner we have ever had in Sri Lanka, really. After that a little surprise.. don’t want to spoiler that to you so just book this damn heavenly experience, it will make you Sri Lanka trip even more special. That’s the most authentic experience you could do here!
Thank you for appreciating the authenticity of the interaction and for supporting the children of Nirosha’s private school. Your visit and your kindness towards the children meant a lot to her and to them. I think your review is an extraordinary promotion of this experience, as it reflects not only the cooking but also the human connection and cultural exchange behind it. We sincerely hope you will come back one day and visit again.
Fantastic experience and to try absolutely. Wonderful welcoming people who made us feel at home, transmitting all their love towards Sri Lankan cuisine and culture. Super experience
Nuwan & Nirosha
We had the opportunity to experience an authentic cooking experience in Nirosha’s home. A fabulous opportunity to see how homegrown produce can be made into the most beautiful delicious curries. It was fascinating to see how the coconut milk was done - the basis for all the curriers. It was also a real treat to make coconut roti. Highly recommend this experience as part of your Sri Lanka trip.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to write such a helpful recommendation. We are delighted that you enjoyed your time in the kitchen and appreciated learning how coconut forms the basis of our typical curries and fresh roti. Your feedback means all the more coming from someone so open-minded and curious about Sri Lankan culture. We would be glad to welcome you back during your next visit to our tropical island.
Imagine you are having lunch in a beautiful home welcomed by a kind family that shows you how to cook and teaches you to mix ingredients, fry in coconut oil, then sit down and eat all the good things you have cooked together. If it was just that it would be enough, but there is so much more. Nirosha shows you in a lunch all the reality that surrounds her, starting with her extended family, to welcome those who have been less fortunate, with the two shy girls but with amazing smiles. His classroom set up on the terrace to make even those with difficulties study. The lunch was definitely amazing but the lived experience fills not only the stomach but also the heart and if you are lucky enough to visit this island you can not miss a visit from Nirosha.
We had a lovely time at Nirosha! Apart from showing us how to make the curries from fresh spices, we were shown were in the garden nearly all the spices came and which part of the plant or tree they came from which was very interesting. Afterwards we had the food we prepared for lunch. Tasted delicious and incredibly fresh!
Thank you for your kind words about your time with my sister Nirosha in her private house. It’s a pleasure to know that you enjoyed learning to prepare the curries from fresh spices, and especially that you found the walk in the garden, seeing where each spice comes from, so interesting. Meeting you was a real highlight for Nirosha as well—sharing the food from her home and garden in this way is something she genuinely loves. She was very happy to welcome you and hopes to do so again in the future.
The Sri Lankan meal experience was organised by our travel agent cum guide, Nuwan. It is a short drive from Hikkaduwa. The host Nuwan’s sister is a teacher who runs this as part of her passion project. They opened their 250 year old ancestral home to us over a brief lunch authentic vegetarian Sri Lankan food. Something we were on a lookout for through the trip. After the lunch, She involved our kids with the various other children who tutor in her house to learn how to write their name in Sinhala. Overall, a great experience very very warm hospitality and scrumptious food. A must do if you are in the vicinity.
Dear Family, I’m glad to read that you enjoyed the truly local food at lunch and appreciated the activities for the children. My sister and her kids also enjoyed having you visit their home and small private school. At Lanka Excursions Holidays, we strive to offer experiences of Sri Lankan local culture that really deserve to be called authentic and unique. Since you were seeking this kind of experience, it is significant to us that we were able to meet your expectations.
Cooking with Nirosha was an authentic experience. She welcomed us to her home with the whole family, they were all extremely helpful with us. Nirosha cooks in the traditional way, using local and tasty products, with the naturalness of a mother who cooks for her children. We thank Nuwan for giving us this chance and Nirosha for teaching us real Sinhalese cuisine.
