Basilikan Santa Maria degli Angeli ligger 4 km från Assisi. Inne i basilikan finns Porziuncola-kapellet; platsen mest älskad av den helige Franciskus och där Gud gav honom speciella nåder. Ursprungligen var Porziuncola ett gammalt kapell, omgivet av en liten del av skog (därav kanske namnet) som tillhörde benediktinerna i klostret S. Benedetto del Monte Subasio. Efter att ha varit övergiven under en lång tid, restaurerades den av Francesco som hyrde den av abbot Teobaldo. Efter den heliges död uppstod några permanenta byggnader runt kyrkan: brödernas kör, olika små oratorier och sedan ett litet kloster. Under andra hälften av 1500-talet beordrade Pius V byggandet av en stor basilika som skulle omsluta och skydda Porziuncola och välkomna skaror av pilgrimer som ständigt flockades dit.
Basilikan Santa Chiara är en religiös byggnad, byggd i nyromansk stil, belägen i Assisi. Basilikan är bland de mest kända i Italien och en av de vackraste i Umbrien. Kyrkan markerar inte bara stadens historiska centrum utan också en betydelsefull plats ur konstnärlig och kulturell synvinkel. Basilikan Santa Chiara byggdes av benediktinermunkarna, som hade en önskan att hedra Santa Chiara, född Agnese 1194 och dog den 13 september 1253. För närvarande tillsammans med Porziuncola, Eremo delle Carceri, Chiesa Nuova och basilikan av San Damiano, katedralen i San Rufino och uppenbarligen basilikan San Francesco, är ett av de centra där pilgrimsfärden till Assisi är koncentrerad.

Byggandet av basilikan påbörjades 1228 av påven Gregorius IX och invigdes sedan 1253 av påven Innocentius IV.

Excellent! Tour assistant and driver were both very pleasant. On time departure. Beautiful drive. Tour guide Marco in Assisi was very thorough and excellent topic knowledge. Tour went long because he seemed to really enjoy what he does. Tour assistant pointed things out on the way, but also didn’t just talk at us the whole time. I cannot recommend the group at Welcome Italy enough for their day excursions. Cars are very clean and comfortable. We had paid for a small group tour but it ended up being only us which made the tour even more personal.

A full day of visits to Orvieto and Assisi, with an excellent pair: Elisabeth and Giuseppe, and a special guide in Assisi, Marco. My husband and I they really enjoyed the four Basilica tour with Dina as our tour guide and her colleague Stefano. Dina was very professional and knowledgeable all the subject matters. She gave us time to explore and pray and attend Mass at the Basilicas. It was truly a magnificent experience and a full day learning more about the history of our faith. Welcome Italy was such a great way for my wife and I to experience a full trip in Rome. We actually had three separate excursions with them. First we went to Castel Gandolfo and Nemi. After a full three days in Rome, this was such a quiet and relaxing day. Antoinetta was so personable and made us feel at home, and our driver Pietro was great. The second day we traveled with Marie and Pino to Orvieto and Assisi. Again, both were professional and it felt like we were traveling with old friends by the end of the day. Our third day we traveled with Cascia and Spoleto. Another day of being immersed with a rich understanding of the history thanks to our guide, Juliana, and driver Flavio. Disclaimer here… my wife and I are Catholic, and from that perspective we felt so close to the history of the church. The guides did a great job of understanding that and catering to it each day. Their recommendations on restaurants while traveling were top notch as well. I cannot say enough good things about the days we spent with Welcome Italy and will absolutely be using their services on our next trip to Italy!
