Our Tavel agent had booked this as a 2 hour horseback ride with a bilingual naturalist . This was a one hour "ride" on a mostly out and back course on the los Lagos estate and local road - very little nature - and no naturalist guide. The main guide Donald was very unfriendly , dismissive and more interested in how he looked on his stallion with its head tied down so severely. He wanted you to not participate as a rider on the horse at all - rather his mission was to drive the horses with their passengers as a herd of cattle to the top and back with utterly no regard for how this would bump riders and horses together . Maybe fun for those with no experience ( but actually not very safe) and not fun if you actually can and want to ride your horse . Disappointing.

Jorge was an amazing tour guide! We got to have a personal tour when we visited and it was awesome! The horses were very sweet and the views were cool too. Thank you Jorge for a great few hours, it was great getting to know you! -Emma and Anthony :)

I would not recommend this horseback riding tour based on my experience. It was not only disappointing, but also felt unsafe. During the ride, the horse I was assigned actually fell, which was very concerning. Then, toward the end of the tour, another horse bit me on the knee. These are not minor issues—this raises serious concerns about how the horses are managed and the overall safety of the experience. What made the situation even more frustrating was the response from the front desk. When I reported what happened, I was told that “it’s a risk people take when they book the tour.” That response felt dismissive and unprofessional. While I understand that some level of risk can exist, guests should still expect proper safety measures and a team that takes incidents seriously. Overall, I left feeling disappointed and concerned. If you’re considering this tour, I would strongly suggest thinking twice and being aware of the potential risks.

Guides were ok but This is not a ride for beginners -I was amazed the people in our group were able to stay on their sadly undernourished horses :(. Do the hike up instead or ATV. It is a cool spot to go and worth it. Just not with this group. These horses are way too skinny and many have sores that weren’t visible until I was up on my horse. I’m sure 4 months of rain hasn’t helped as I know the moisture is constant but I saw plenty of other healthy looking horses as we traveled through the rainforest area. These horses look dead in their eyes and have ribs showing and hip bones exposed. This is not how a horse that works this hard should look and I would expect more from a major outfitter like this. I wish I never participated in this activity and I urge you to not support this horse outfitter. Find another business to give your money to! I’ll be speaking to my travel agent about this also as it was set up thru them.

Our horse ride through the river with Jorge, Victor and Joshua was truly amazing. They were energetic and eager to answer any questions. The horses were very well taken care of and the trail was perfect for riding! Very Recommended for all kinds of groups. If you want to gallop or walk they will accompany you wherever you want.

We took the 3 hour horseback riding trip up to Arenal Volcano. We were lucky enough to have Eric who we’d had the pleasure of his expertise the previous day on our first ever zip line experience which was awesome. I had ridden quite a bit in my younger years (I’m 66 now) and my partner has about the same experience. There was another couple that had never ridden before and they we understandably nervous. Eric was very polite and patient with us all. He told me that he has been guiding for 30 years and you can tell from his experience and passion for the great outdoors, he has chosen the right career path. Thank you Eric! The horses were also very experienced and were well taken care of which was very important to us!

Our guide, Jorge, was totally unprofessional and reckless. He raced and weaved his horse between our line on the busy road, reared the horse up next to us as well as rearing the horse up and backing into hikers on the path. My grandsons, who have no riding experience, were told to race ahead that often we could not see them. The volcano site and lava field are well worth a visit and going by horseback can be fun way to enjoy the excursion. Just make sure you have a professional, responsible guide. The office was closed by the time we returned but we did report our experience to our booking agent.
