I visited during the...

I visited during the rainy season, which made for a cool, refreshing hike—especially during the uphill sections. There were friendly attendants stationed at each of the hanging bridges who were incredibly helpful and even offered to take photos for me. Although I didn’t see many animals (mostly the tiny red poison dart frogs), the stunning landscapes and peaceful atmosphere more than made up for it. Overall, it was a relaxing and rejuvenating experience that I’d definitely recommend for anyone looking to enjoy Costa Rica’s natural beauty.

A great self-guided visit — with one hidden trail worth knowing about

We visited Mistico Park and opted for the self-guided tour rather than booking a guide, and overall it was a really enjoyable few hours. Wildlife We saw howler monkeys swinging through the trees right along the bridges, and a troop of white-faced capuchins near the exit moving through the canopy above us — they stayed up high and didn't come close, but it was still a great sighting. That was the extent of the wildlife we personally spotted; we noticed several groups walking with guides who had scopes and binoculars pointed out much more, so if wildlife spotting is your top priority, a guide is likely worth it. The Hidden Trail (read this before you go) This is the biggest thing we wish someone had told us in advance. Early in the main trail, there's a detour up into what looks like a hummingbird garden. If you keep going left inside that garden, there's an easy-to-miss sign reading "new trail / dirt path." We took it, and it turned out to be a genuine dirt hiking trail — not paved like the rest of the park — that climbs steeply across three plateaus, with the third offering a gorgeous, unobstructed view of Lake Arenal and the volcano. It's absolutely worth doing for the view alone, but come prepared: we were only in regular sneakers and it should really be done in hiking boots. The way down is steep, muddy, and covered in loose leaves, and it deposits you right back onto the main trail at the very first hanging bridge — which meant merging into whatever line had built up there. We're not sure if this trail is offered or mentioned on the guided tour, so it may be worth asking about at the entrance either way. The Bridges & Trail Difficulty Aside from that detour, the main trail is well-maintained and mostly paved, with a few steeper sections. It's not a difficult hike overall, but don't underestimate it either — we're both 29 and in reasonably good shape, and were genuinely worn out by the end, especially with the bonus trail added in. If you're unsteady on your feet, walking poles and using the guardrails on the steeper stretches are a good idea, though we didn't personally need them. The hanging bridges themselves start at the highest point and work their way down. They do sway and bounce noticeably as people walk across, even without anyone jumping around — worth knowing if you're not comfortable with heights. I'm not a fan of heights myself and made it across fine, though I crossed a couple of the higher ones quickly rather than lingering. Pricing & Logistics We felt the self-guided pricing was fair given the trail maintenance and views — you're in a touristy part of the country, so it's priced accordingly, but it didn't feel like a rip-off. There's a free shuttle from the main parking lot to the entrance, though since we did the self-guided route we were able to park right at the top near the entrance, which was a nice bonus. Our Main Complaint The park posts a 15-person maximum on each bridge at a time, but in practice this didn't seem to be enforced at all. Some visitors would push past a bridge that already had people on it, then stop in the middle to take photos or watch wildlife for several minutes without moving forward, holding up everyone behind them. This was honestly our biggest frustration with the visit — less a park issue and more a "some people aren't considerate of others" issue, but worth mentioning since it affects the pace of your visit. Bottom Line A genuinely beautiful park, well worth the roughly 2 hours we spent there (longer if you go with a guide). We're glad we did the self-guided version and found the hidden dirt trail to be the highlight of the visit — just come in the right footwear if you plan to find it. This felt like a one-and-done experience rather than something we'd repeat on a future trip, but for a first visit to the Arenal area, it's a must.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us! We are pleased to know that you enjoyed your visit and had the chance to connect with nature along the way. Regarding your observation about the capacity indicated on the bridge signs, we would like to reassure you that this 15-person limit is established solely for reasons of comfort, flow of movement, and overall order, ensuring everyone can enjoy the scenery without crowds. In terms of structural safety and load capacity, our bridges are designed to support a much higher limit of up to 100 people simultaneously. We sincerely appreciate your valuable feedback, as it helps us keep our guests informed and reassured. We hope to welcome you again soon for more special moments. Pura Vida!

Great family hike and Costa Rican experience.

I’ve decided that with my family, it’s just easier to book the experiences rather than get input as they are all indecisive. I chose this trip without consulting my family of four, which includes two teenage daughters. We all love the outdoors, and this trip was loved by everyone! It is a bit touristy in that the path is paved and fenced, but it was a very safe way to explore the local beauty and the jungle. We didn’t see any sloths or monkeys, but enjoyed the beauty of the area. My girls said several times how much they loved this adventure, and I highly recommend it. We didn’t the non-guided tour so we could go at our own pace. Didn’t regret not having a guide. Staff was friendly and helpful and we felt very safe.

Awesome experience and a thrill!

Our family of 3 had a great time here! The hanging bridges definitely added a thrill! The condition of the trails and bridges was very good. We took the dirt trail shortly after the start which added some distance and provided fanatic views of the volcano and lake. This was a bit of a workout due to the elevation gain so be prepared and wear decent hiking footwear. We saw and heard monkeys, one of which posed for 10 minutes in a tree right above our heads! Overall it took us almost 3 hours which was well worth the cost.

Don’t miss

Very unique experience. Highly recommend. We walked without a guide and loved it - however I’m certain we would have seen 10x more with a guide. SO much hidden wildlife.

Self-guided tour in the rain!

My family and I did the self-guided tour option on an incredibly rainy morning. It was pouring most of the time we were there, but actually it did not diminish the experience. We were soaked but we had fun! The trails are well-paved with concrete or bricks, and the bridges were sturdy and not slippery. There were rails and fences that were very well-kept and made everything feel safe and easy to walk on. The rain actually also helped keep things cool and kept the mosquitoes away. We did not see much in the distance, and didn’t see too many animals, but the forest was still beautiful and the mist added to the mysterious feeling. We saw some birds, including a toucan, monkeys, spiders, and heard frogs but didn’t see them. I would recommend this tour rain or shine. Note: go early!! We went at 7am and had a very peaceful start. By the end of our 2ish hours, it was very crowded with groups.

Nice

Cool hike. We took the long way. We did about 3 miles. It was a good workout but we went early and it was over cast so we didn't see much. We had a had time trying to figure out the map. The park should have the bridges better marked. That caused us to back track a little. The fruit stand out by where you turn off 142 is a must stop for a refreshing coconut water.

Amazing 2 hours!

Definitely worth the money to visit this amazing park. Over 3 of trails of heaven and jungle. The bridges were cool, and the waterfall was so peaceful. It takes about 1.5 hours to 2 hours to walk it. You can do it faster but slow down and enjoy it. Recommend wearing closed toe shoes. They will still let you go but it’s better.
