Beskrivning

30 min

Under andra världskriget samlade ockupationsstyrkorna judar i denna tidigare teater.

Incredibly interesting, moving and surreal

This was such an interesting museum to visit, although at the same time it was quite surreal and obviously very emotional in places. There was so much to see and learn about, and I thought everything was presented incredibly well and respectfully. My family and I were given a free audio tour when we arrived, which was really good as we could go around completely at our own pace. We could spend longer on the parts we were particularly interested in, or miss certain parts if we didn’t want to see or listen to them, which I really appreciated. There were also videos where we could listen to Holocaust survivors talking about their own experiences. I found these incredibly interesting and moving, and they had English subtitles too, which was really useful! The museum was really well laid out, and each section was nicely spread out, so it never felt cramped or like there was too much information all in one place. The atmosphere was incredibly quiet; almost completely silent at times, which felt very appropriate considering the subject and made it easier to take everything in without feeling rushed. Our ticket also included the Hollandsche Schouwburg (the former theatre) across the road, which was great as we didn’t have to pay anything extra. It’s a much smaller museum, so it doesn’t take as long to go around, but it was still really interesting and we watched a video about its history. I personally found this part much more emotional, though. Standing in the exact same place where Jewish people had been rounded up before being deported to concentration and extermination camps felt incredibly surreal. Like the main museum, the theatre was also quite dark and very quiet, although the atmosphere there felt even more sombre. We spent approximately 2 hours there altogether, and I thought it was really good value for money, especially with the free audio tour and the theatre included. Overall, it was a really interesting, moving and worthwhile experience. Some parts were understandably quite difficult to see, but I’m really glad we visited and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re visiting Amsterdam.

The Holocaust

A very somber and sobering experience of events we cannot forget. Very informative and educational of what happened.

Deeply moving experience

This was a very moving experience. It is a former Jewish theatre that was taken over and used by the Germans to deport tens of thousands of people to the concentration camps. There is a film / audio tour, explaining the process as well as personal stories from a few survivors but mostly victims some information was gathered by journals and letters that were found. There is a reflection garden that has a monument where people still place stones to remember the people that were lost and that suffered here. THe building was bought back to be converted into this monument. It is across the street from the National Holocaust museum. There are several other memorials in the area that I am grouping together- such as the memorial wall. You can also look up names of victims from Amsterdam on the digital monument by typing in their namess.

Captiviting museum

It gives a different perspective from all nations and reminds you not only of the horror what took place but all those who tried to help.

Don’t miss this opportunity while in Amsterdam!

I was so impressed to sit and listen to the stories told by the survivors themselves, as older persons. Remarkable and touching. Then photographs, personal belongings of both young and old were unforgettable.

So we never forget.

I like that it is self guided so you can take your time. While the subject matter is very somber it is a must experience.
