Taj Mahals historia kretsar kring en storslagen berättelse om kärlek och förlust: Mughal-kejsaren Shah Jahan beställde den 1631 som ett magnifikt mausoleum för sin älskade fru, Mumtaz Mahal, som dog när hon födde sitt 14:e barn. Agra Forts historia började före mughalerna, men det var kejsar Akbar som återuppbyggde det som en röd sandstensfästning och huvudstad omkring 1565 - 1573, och förvandlade ett tegelfort (Badalgarh) till en storslagen muromgärdad stad och militär knutpunkt. Efterträdare som Jahangir och Shah Jahan lade till utsökta vita marmorpalats, moskéer och salar (Diwan-i-Khas). Det fungerade som den huvudsakliga Mughal bostad fram till 1638, bevittnade strider, och berömda blev fängelse för Shah Jahan, som tittade på Taj Mahal från Musamman Burj till sin död, innan senare faller
