Området som nu är känt som Port Adelaide var traditionellt bebott av Kaurna-folket, som också ockuperade Adelaide Plains, Barossa Valley, den västra sidan av Fleurieu-halvön och norrut förbi Snowtown. Kaurna-folket kallade Port Adelaide-området Yartapuulti, och flodmynningsområdet Yertabulti, vilket betyder "sömnens eller dödens land". Port Adelaide grundades av europeiska bosättare 6 januari 1837, även om det ursprungligen var känt under titeln Port Creek Settlement. Sjöfarten började en månad efter grundandet även om den då var olämplig för stora fartyg som istället fick landa vid Holdfast Bay tills hamnen chartrades.
Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary är en av pärlorna i storstadsstaden Adelaide. Denna marina park ligger bara 20 minuter från Adelaide och är hem för cirka 30 bosatta flasknäsdelfiner, med ytterligare 400 övergående delfiner som besöker vid olika tidpunkter. Dessa vilda delfiner kommer hit för att mata, leka, umgås och amma sina kalvar. Inne i helgedomen hittar du en 10 000 år gammal mangroveskog, samt sjögräs, saltkärr, tidvattensplattor och tidvattenbäckar, som alla ger livsmiljö och mat åt delfinerna. The Sanctuary är en del av södra Australiens största hamn och har ett antal aboriginska och europeiska kulturella och historiska platser av intresse. Området är också en populär plats för fågelskådning och delar det mesta av sin norra kustmiljö med Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary.
Clipper Ship City of Adelaide är världens äldsta clipperfartyg. Byggt i Sunderland, England, och sjösatt den 7 maj 1864. Staden Adelaide byggdes av William Pile, Hay and Co. för att transportera passagerare och gods mellan Storbritannien och Australien. Mellan 1864 och 1887 gjorde fartyget 23 årliga returresor från London och Plymouth till Adelaide, södra Australien. Under denna period spelade hon en viktig roll i invandringen av Australien. På återresan bar hon passagerare, ull och koppar från Adelaide och Port Augusta till London.
Osborne Naval Shipyard är en fleranvändaranläggning i Osborne på Lefevre-halvön i södra Australien. Den grundades 1987 för Australian Submarine Corporation, och de första produkterna från anläggningen var de sex Collins-Class-ubåtarna.

Loved the experience. We went with my 92 year old dad who has fond memories of swimming in the Port River as a teenager and was amazed at all the changes along the river. We were also lucky to see dolphins.
We had a great time. very informative. the crew was fantastic. Great Boat that was easy to get on and off. It was great to see the Dolphins
What a lovely time we had. Traveling the Port River on a cruise with Port River Cruises. The crew was great and very knowledgeable. Not the greatest of days regarding the weather but we did see a couple of dolphins and many birds. Highly recommended.
We were lucky enough to see dolphins up so close. A very informative tour, the time seemed to fly by. Well worth the money.

Nice experience, too bad not to have seen the penguins.belle the carcasses of the ships and beautiful story told by the captain of bordo.i pelicans were many and ate continuously na we did not see the dolphins

The trip was well organized and the skipper was very friendly and had a lot to tell. At the beginning you drive through the harbor and can look at old sailing boats and boats that are being restored. Then you drive into the estuary and first see old ships in the "ship graveyard". There are also supposed to be dolphins in this area. Since the number of dolphins in this region is manageable, it seems to be down to luck that you get to see any. Unfortunately we didn't see any. We wouldn't do the trip again, there was too much harbor and too little nature for us.
A dolphin cruise (cost $80) that sees no dolphins ... in an area that's basically the cess pool of years of industry - beautiful day to be on the river - but I counted $1440 made (ie 18 X $80) on a "Dolphin tour" that didn't see one single dolphin ... clearly the extremely low tide was the reason... Tides are recorded and known well before the date - why then offer tours when tide is extremely low. Disgusted and appalled this operator can get away with it... I was even told to move out of my seat...
Thank you for the review. We're sorry you did not enjoy your time on our Maritime and Dolphins Cruise. As is listed in our tour description this is a tour on the maritime history and present day rejuvenation of Port Adelaide as well as visiting the Dolphin Sanctuary. Port Adelaide is a working Port (as listed in the description) and our guests enjoy learning about the day to day life in the Port and seeing it in action. Our photos are all taken from within the area and show clearly exactly what you were to see on tour and that while the Port is a working dock it is by no means a 'cess pool'. In regards to dolphins, we can understand how disappointing it is to not see dolphins but these are wild animals and we can not make guarantees on their presence. The tides in no way effect when and where the dolphins will be present. They are just as likely to be within the sanctuary during low tide as they are in high and we see them equally frequently in both (as seen in reviews for our Dolphin and Ships Graveyard tour where low tide is the most popular time for tours to run). It’s a shame you couldn’t take anything away from the significant information and history you were provided with but we also understand that you can’t please everyone all of the time. We pride ourselves in highlighting one of South Australia’s heritage precinct and this tour provides the perfect platform to learn and engage in Port Adelaide’s maritime history.
