How to Choose a Guided Tour: 7 Questions to Ask Before Booking

Why This Matters

The global tours and activities market is worth over $150 billion annually. It also contains some of travel's worst value and best value in close proximity. Knowing which you're booking matters enormously.

7 Questions to Ask Before Booking

1. What is the maximum group size?

The smaller the group, the better the experience. For walking tours, under 12 is comfortable. Under 8 is excellent. Large coach tours with 40+ people are rarely great for deep exploration.

2. What does the guide's background include?

A licensed local guide who has passed official certification exams is different from an enthusiastic volunteer. Look for: years of experience, specialisation, and whether they're a native or long-term resident of the city.

3. Is admission included in the price?

Some tours quote a low headline price and add admission costs on arrival. Calculate the full cost before comparing.

4. What's the cancellation policy?

Most reputable tour operators offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour. Anything non-refundable with more than a week's lead time deserves scrutiny.

5. How many reviews are there, and are they recent?

100 reviews from 2019 tell you about a company that may have completely different guides today. 20 reviews from the last 3 months are more informative.

6. Does the tour match your pace and interest level?

A 4-hour walking tour in 35°C heat suits fit travellers, not those with knee problems or young children. Read tour descriptions carefully.

7. Is this the best way to experience this specific thing?

Some experiences don't benefit from a guide. Others are completely transformed: a visit to the Roman Forum without a guide is a confusing field of broken stone; with a guide it becomes a journey into the most important civilisation in Western history.

Red Flags

  • No physical address or contact details for the operator
  • Reviews that all sound identical
  • Much cheaper than every competitor with no explanation
  • Mandatory shopping stops (sign the guide is paid by commission)
