Amazing Tour, but book directly through the plantation

The history and experiences on this tour were truly phenomenal. Being present with ancestral stories and learning felt deeply meaningful — the kind of immersive connection that stays with you long after the trip ends. The content itself was rich, educational, and beautifully curated. However, the logistics left a lot to be desired and significantly impacted our experience. Due to low booking numbers on our specific tour, our group was merged with multiple other tour lines without adequate notice. This caused unexpected delays as we were held to wait through tours we had not planned for — tours that were not part of our original itinerary. The timing consequences were serious. One member of our group nearly missed a flight. Only a providential delay saved what could have been a costly and stressful situation. This was not a minor inconvenience — it was a disruption that affected real travel plans. What made it worse was the lack of communication. Information was shared piecemeal and only through my friend's tour provider rather than directly with all travelers. We deserved timely, clear, and direct communication about any changes to the tour structure. The experiences themselves are absolutely worth having. We would encourage anyone to explore this history. That said, moving forward, we will be booking directly with the sites and experiences we wish to visit to avoid this kind of logistical mismanagement.

Horrible depiction of the evil that took place

Not a true depiction of what plantation life was like for the slaves. No creativity or thought was put into re enacting the evil that took place there. An empty and awful rendition of the times. It’s a slap in the face to black people and a lie to white people. The owner should be ashamed, it’s just a money making attraction. They had a nerve to re due a slave shack with new wood as if the slaves lived in new construction. The master’s house was empty and very little items were there to represent the times. Where’s the hanging and whipping tree! Where’s the picking fields? Where’s master’s ugly face in a photo. Where’s the master’s house furniture? Where’s the whip and other hardware use to kill the bodies and spirits of the slaves. A truly horrible lack of any attempt towards the truths of this major time in history! The mosquitoes were out of control, someone should exterminate the grounds while they’re putting up their new pretty construction. Lies! Lies! Lies! Soooo disrespectful to portray a park like scene. It’s a money maker. The store was the best thing there but it was the worst thing there. This place should be free, especially to black people. Enough of blood and free labor has been paid. Shameful! I will tell everyone don’t waste your time or money! Sad injustice!

Crystal, thank you for sharing your experience. We’re sorry it didn’t provide the depth and connection you were looking for. We provide seamless round-trip transportation for our guests to the Whitney plantation but we hear your concerns. For those looking for a deeper, more guided discussion around the realities of slavery, Black history, and culture, our Soul of New Orleans tour is where we’re able to really bring that connection and context to life.

Whitney plantation

Basic but extremely informative. Timely. No bells and whistles so use a different tour if you want someone to explain it all. The plantation is very interesting. And has incredible sculptures and written explanations. The audio tour was excellent and our bus and guide, who was sweet, was timely.

Powerfully illuminates the brutal history of enslavement while honoring Black life with dignity and respect.

The Whitney Plantation Museum Tour was an incredibly impactful experience that powerfully illuminates the deeply horrific history of enslavement, while centering Black African lives with dignity and respect. In many ways, it felt like a memorial—bringing to life a painful history that continues to shape American society. The self-guided tour was thoughtfully designed, educational, and easy to follow. I especially appreciated how the museum highlights stories of Black resistance, rebellion, and liberation—it was both grounding and empowering to witness. I would strongly encourage everyone to experience this tour.

Great transportation to and from the site. The site/museum has done a wonderful job of telling the story of this place through those who were enslaved there - it was well worth the time to visit.

Whitney Plantation & Museum

Should not be missed! 2nd Line Tours contacted the day of our tour and gave us an estimated time. They arrived promptly and we had commentary by our driver at times about our surroundings. The tour itself was self- guided with audio cassettes with 14 stops throughout the plantation. Gives life to the subject of slavery and life on a plantation..

The plantation was a very educational and sobering history lesson in the slavery. Definitely do not miss it; could have spent more time here reading all the stories. Though there were other tours that arrived after us, it never felt crowded. We had hotel pick up which was prompt but the speaker was not working on the mini van so you could not hear anything that the tour guide was saying.

Poor Organisation for pick-up. Trip o.k.

There was a mix up between Viator and 2nd Line Tours about the pick-up which was not a big problem, although 2nd Line Tours should have been in contact before the trip date to let us know the change of location. As there were only 6 of us on the trip and we were all picked up at the same location at 8.30 why was it necessary to leave us standing in the freezing cold for 30 mins? By all means have a 'window' of 8am to 8.30 for hotel pick ups but have the main parking lot location at a scheduled time. There was also no reason why a small bus could not have picked up from Bienville Hotel, 100 yards into the French quarter. Our driver, (Nage?) was very good and drove well but it would have been more interesting had she been able to give us some more background information about the area or had something taped to play during the drive. What she did tell us was very interesting but it only lasted about 15 mins of the 2 hour journey Witney Plantation was worthwhile and we had 2 hours there to self-guide. It is only a half day tour as we were back by 12.30.

Hi Lorraine, Thank you for your feedback. We’d like to clarify that the pick-up details and timing were provided in advance through Viator, and the tour operated as scheduled. We do understand that any confusion can be frustrating, and we’ll continue working to make communication as clear as possible. We’re glad you still found the experience worthwhile and enjoyed your driver.

Deeply moving experience

Our tour bus driver was kind, friendly, informative, and helpful. The plantation tour was sobering and provided space for thoughtful reflection on such a painful part of our history in the United States.
