Captain Drew, Bruno and Matilde are the best, most knowledgeable and friendly team we’ve ever experienced on a tour. They make it educational and fun. They are our favorite and will recommend to our friends and family who visit the area. For those of you wondering what to wear: dress in layers because even if it is a warm temperature on land, the cold of the water and wind will make you wish you had brought a winter coat. Bring a warm hat and light gloves or make sure you have a very warm hoodie. Wear pants, socks and closed toe shoes. The office has beverages and snacks for sale and we recommend you either bring your own or buy some at the office. There are some snacks for purchase on board but not as big a selection. Overall, it’s an informative, fun and memorable experience. Well worth the money. This team does an outstanding job, so definitely bring some extra cash for showing your appreciation.
Guide was Ph.D informative about the species. Saw more whales than any of my previous excursions.. Well worth the price. Two thumbs up.
Amazing experience, great staff. Every time I have gone (5 times) it is a unique trip. I would highly recommend this.
What an awesome day with Jeff & Capt Brock, Lots of information and at least 12 Orcas seen. The trip lasted about 3.5 hrs. Plenty to sunshine too. Not too pricey, great value for the money. Would do it again. Thanks Outer Island Expeditions, the entire family was thrilled with the excursion, especially the grandkids.
Amazing experience!! Excellent captain and crew. Bruno was fun and very knowledgable!.
The excursion was awesome! The crew, Jeff, Sophia were very informative & interactive. We saw some great sites. We really enjoyed the experience.
Phenomenal experience with this crew! Highly recommend this tour. Love that this is a tour based out of Anacortes, since getting to Friday Harbor is near impossible for lodging and ferry reservations. Outer Island was the hero of our trip, saved the day as a super option to have a home base in Anacortes and be able to still explore the area and get on the water for some whale watching. Value for the money is better than what you get out of San Juan or Orcas islands. A medium-sized vessel (big, but not too big), a great crew, and a trip that can last up to 5 hours if needed to see some whales -- most tours cap out at the 2 or 3 hour mark regardless, so the extra buffer is really a nice value. It takes some time pressure off and helps the trip feel more fluid and enjoyable, less time-constrained. The naturalists on our trip were next-level: engaging, enthusiastic, and really involved everyone. Our captain Brock was funny and handsome!, crew was Megan and Matilde, and they were knowledgeable, fun, and did a great job being informative and managing a tour of about 15-20 people. This trip was ideal for someone who's never been on a whale tour before, as the boat had tons of amenities you don't usually find. This boat had a bathroom, cushy indoor viewing, even refreshments for sale. There was an inside area, outer deck, and upper deck for viewing. This made it suitable for all types of people and ages/abilities, and also meant that if you were cold you could go inside. I've been on tours before and this was by far the most comfortable/accommodating boat. I overpacked jackets thinking I'd be cold, but this was so comfortable. I didn't need the extra wind breaker, just one puffy coat. I brought snacks, water, and rented binoculars. Had plenty of space to store stuff away from wind (inside), and spent most of the tour out on the deck. Make sure you wear shoes you can balance in, as the boat picks up speed. Stow a hat away, and don't let your airpods fly out into the ocean. (Why you wearing airpods on a whale tour anyway??) Previous reviews said this was a rough and tumble trip, or the boat doesn't get that close. That is not the case. This trip was smooth, comfortable, orca-focused but still gorgeous and fun adn full of other wildlife, and we got in the appropriate range just like every other boat out there. Our crew did a better job than the other boats spotting and safely following the whales for viewing. A++! Saw a pod of transient whales really quick into the trip. Spent an hour or two with the whales, then headed back with a few wildlife stops, making this a solid 3-hour trip. Outer Island delivered on their guarantee for sure!, and it wasn't even 5 hours. Had a great experience, wish it was longer, but only because I'd happily stay on that boat all day and night. I'll recommend Outer Island X to friends/family, especially for those who can't manage a trip to San Juan island this time of year. This was a splurge for me but well worth it. I appreciate that they made the ticket cost really worth it!
We had a great time, we left on time, the guides were knowledgeable and super friendly. The trip was as promised, smooth, and lasted about 3.5 hours. We made stops along the way, to see other animals, and they found us some whales to watch!! This was a lifelong dream come true for us!! Recommend!!
Outer Island Expeditions gave us a great experience whale watching. The Captain and Crew were very knowledgeable and took their time making the experience personable. Saw orcas, a sea otter and sea lions.
It was a great experience that I had been looking forward to all my life.Since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to see an Orca in the wild. I would 100000000% recommend Outer island excursions to anyone who would like to go whale watching. The staff were friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about all things sealife. You can tell the staff have deep appreciation and respect for every creature that calls the Salish sea home ❤️. Would definitely book again!
