Você pode facilmente passar um dia inteiro explorando os maravilhosos templos de Kanchipuram e Mamallapuram, cavernas e gravuras rupestres. A maioria foi esculpida na rocha durante o reinado do rei Pallava Narasimhavarman I do século 7, cujo apelido Mamalla (Grande Lutador) deu o nome à cidade. Dos cinco templos de Shiva do sul da Índia, associados aos cinco elementos, esse recinto de 12 hectares é o santuário da Terra. Você entra embaixo do gopuram sul sem pintura de 59 metros de altura, cujas esculturas animadas foram esculpidas em 1509 sob o domínio de Vijayanagar. No interior, um corredor com colunas leva à esquerda para o complexo central, que Nandi enfrenta da direita. O santuário interno (apenas hindus) contém um lingam feito de terra e uma câmara de espelho cuja imagem central de Shiva é refletida em repetição sem fim.
Visitaremos o magnífico templo do Templo Kailasanathar dos tempos de Pallava. Kanchipuram era a capital do reino medieval indiano de Pallavas. Os Pallavas foram instrumentais na transição da arquitetura de corte de pedra para os templos de pedra. Nós apreciaremos essas maravilhas arquitetônicas construídas em 600 dC.
Amontoados no extremo sul de Mamallapuram, os Cinco Rathas foram, surpreendentemente, todos esculpidos em grandes rochas. Cada um desses belos templos do século VII foi dedicado a um deus hindu e agora tem o nome de um ou mais dos Pandavas, os cinco irmãos-heróis do épico Mahabharata, ou de sua esposa comum, Draupadi. Os rathas estavam escondidos na areia até serem escavados pelos britânicos há 200 anos. Ratha é sânscrito para 'carruagem' e pode se referir à forma dos templos ou à sua função como veículos para os deuses. Acredita-se que eles não servissem originalmente como locais de adoração, mas como modelos arquitetônicos.
Também visitamos a Penitência de Arjuna, um baixo-relevo de 100 pés x 45 pés, onde uma obra-prima inteira do épico Mahabharata foi esculpida.
A próxima parada é no Butterball de Krishna, uma visão curiosa de um pedregulho em forma de bola de 5 metros de diâmetro que está empoleirado precariamente em um declive e desafia as leis da gravidade de Newton!
Parado como um magnífico punho de elegância de corte de pedra com vista para o mar, rodeado por jardins e cortes arruinados, o Templo de duas torres Shore simboliza as alturas da arquitetura Pallava e as ambições marítimas dos reis Pallava. Seu pequeno tamanho desmente sua excelente proporção e a suprema qualidade das esculturas, muitas agora erodidas em embelezamentos vagamente impressionistas. Construído sob Narasimhavarman II no século VIII, é o mais antigo templo de pedra independente em Tamil Nadu.

Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram made for an excellent day trip and a fascinating introduction to the rich history and culture of Tamil Nadu. The temples and monuments were beautiful, with intricate carvings, impressive architecture, and centuries of history around every corner. They were very resourceful and made the trip fun! I thought it would be good if I wanted to travel around with peace of mind, such as traveling alone for the first time for women in India. Maybe some buses if we can get away.
