Different side of Edinburgh

Entertaining, fascinating and interesting . As it is predominantly underground just be careful on stairs and need to duck your head in places but the guide reminds you of this Thank you for a great experience Jordan

History Rediscovered

This was one of two underground vault tours we booked. Very informative and intriguing. The length of the tour was appropriate for the subject. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable of the subject matter. Finding out people had to live in those conditions was heartbreaking - along with the history of the vaults as it related to the brutal conditions. The rediscovery of the vaults after being forgotten is a good history lesson. Additionally, the "spirits" of the vaults capture the imagination. The cost was reasonable for the activity. Small group tour in a crowded area (Tattoo and Fringe timeframe).

Wonderfully entertaining tour

The Vaults tour was both informative and entertaining. Brendan was an excellent guide, and possessed a wonderful talent for keeping us on our toes and making us laugh, despite the sordid history of the vaults. A great way to get a bit of extra history of Edinburgh in addition to the history of the vaults and South Bridge and Cowgate. Very much recommended!

Hard to Follow and Underwhelming

We were quite disappointed with this tour, mainly because it was difficult to follow and did not feel very engaging. The biggest issue for us was the guide’s very strong Scottish accent combined with speaking quite quickly and with very few pauses. As non-native English speakers, we found large parts of the commentary difficult to understand. There also wasn’t much sense of interaction with the group or checking whether people were following the story. A surprising amount of attention seemed to go into managing the group — making sure random passers-by did not join, keeping everyone together, positioning people correctly, etc. — rather than developing the historical content of the tour. It is also worth managing expectations about the “underground vaults.” Roughly half of the tour takes place outside in the Old Town. The second half is in the vaults, but these are not really “underground” in the sense you might imagine from something like the Paris Catacombs. Because Edinburgh is built on hills and multiple levels, they feel more like enclosed rooms on a lower level of the city. The area we visited was small, warm and dry rather than dark, deep or atmospheric. Inside the vaults, the guide became very loud, at times uncomfortably so, and added some theatrical acting to the stories. That part was not terrible, but it felt more like a performance than the historical tour we had expected. Overall, the experience simply wasn’t for us. If you enjoy theatrical storytelling and can easily understand fast Scottish English, you may enjoy it more. But for non-native English speakers or people expecting a substantial underground historical site, I would suggest adjusting your expectations before booking.

A lot of walking and...

A lot of walking and stairs, so be mindful if you use a cane or get tired easily. Nice history and backstory. Very dim lighting in vaults, so not for someone afraid of the dark.

Great fun and interesting

The guide, James made this tour. He was knowledgeable and really good fun which kept everybody interested. His love of the job shines through and his enthusiasm was infections. We had a great time, laughed and learnt a lot too. Well done James.
