Mario made Pompeii come alive for us. He was the perfect guide-passionate about Pompeii, extremely knowledgeable, courteous and attentive. We had a fantastic experience! We booked directly through Diego after a friend recommended him and shared his contact. He scheduled us with Mario for our tour that took place just a few days after booking. He was prompt to pick us up from the cruise port, gave us an incredible tour that we all loved (ages 8, 14 and adults)! Per chi fa il mio lavoro, leggere che avete avuto la sensazione di vedere **Pompei tornare in vita davanti ai vostri occhi** è probabilmente uno dei complimenti più belli che si possano ricevere. Pompei è un luogo straordinario, ma è anche immenso e complesso. Si può facilmente trascorrere ore camminando tra strade, case e monumenti e vedere tantissimo… senza però riuscire realmente a comprendere quello che si ha davanti. Il mio lavoro, almeno per come lo intendo io, è proprio quello di dare un significato a quelle pietre. Dietro una porta, un bancone di una bottega, i solchi lasciati sulla strada, un affresco o la disposizione delle stanze di una casa si nascondono informazioni preziose sulla vita di quasi duemila anni fa. Ed è proprio questo l'aspetto dell'archeologia che amo maggiormente raccontare: non soltanto **quando** è successo qualcosa, ma soprattutto **chi erano quelle persone, come vivevano, cosa mangiavano, come lavoravano, come trascorrevano il loro tempo e come funzionava la loro città**. Per questo sono particolarmente felice che abbiate apprezzato la formula privata. Non credo nei tour “fotocopia”: ogni gruppo ha interessi, curiosità, tempi e domande differenti. Avere la possibilità di costruire il percorso intorno alle persone che ho davanti mi permette di trasformare una semplice visita guidata in qualcosa di molto più personale. We met Mario directly at the entrance of the excavations for our private archaeological tour of Pompeii. The skip-the-line tickets were already organized, so we entered without stress and were able to dedicate all our time to the visit. Pompeii is immense and can be difficult to understand without a truly prepared guide. Mario, on the other hand, built an intelligent and engaging route for us, choosing places and details that we would never have noticed on our own. Il fatto che abbiate apprezzato non solo i monumenti, ma anche il modo in cui si costruisce la conoscenza archeologica, per me è particolarmente importante. Pompei non è soltanto un luogo da osservare: è un enorme laboratorio storico, dove ogni muro, ogni strato di terreno, ogni oggetto e ogni iscrizione possono diventare una fonte da interpretare. Per questo durante le mie visite cerco sempre di spiegare non soltanto “che cosa” vediamo, ma anche “come” possiamo saperlo. Capire il lavoro degli archeologi, il metodo dello scavo, il confronto tra le evidenze e le ipotesi rende l’esperienza molto più profonda e permette di guardare il sito con occhi completamente diversi. Sono molto felice anche che abbiate percepito il valore di un percorso costruito in maniera intelligente. Pompei è enorme e cercare semplicemente di vedere tutto spesso significa, paradossalmente, capire molto poco. Preferisco selezionare luoghi significativi, creare collegamenti tra loro e lasciare spazio alle domande e agli interessi delle persone che ho davanti. È proprio questo uno dei grandi vantaggi di un tour privato: niente spiegazioni impersonali, niente corsa dietro a un gruppo numeroso, niente itinerario rigido uguale per tutti. La visita può cambiare continuamente in funzione della curiosità degli ospiti. E poi c’è l’aspetto che amo di più: riportare le persone dentro la città. Io preferisco partire dalle persone: dalle loro case, dalle botteghe, dai graffiti, dagli spazi pubblici, dalle abitudini quotidiane. È così che le rovine iniziano davvero a parlare. Sono felice che abbiate notato dettagli che, senza una spiegazione, sarebbero probabilmente passati inosservati. Per me è proprio questo uno degli aspetti più belli del lavoro di guida: aiutare chi visita il sito a cambiare sguardo e a leggere ciò che ha davanti con strumenti nuovi.
