We booked this tour well in advance of our trip to Bordeaux, and we scheduled it for our first day in town. We thought it would help us get an understanding of the area and it was exceptional. We met our guide, Alex, at Cinema Utopia, kind of a landmark spot. Alex was super upbeat and talked us through the plan for the morning. Then we took off on foot toward the first of our attractions which features canales, the baked confection of the area with a caramelized exterior and very moist interior. This shop claims to be the first/oldest/best canales shop and they say they are the only shop to get the perfect exterior because of the copper molds they use. I have no idea other than to say they taste good fresh. Next we were off to a boulangeria, a French bakery. Alex purchased a number of different types of bread and we sampled all of them. All the while, Alex was explaining the differences in the types of bread product and the differences in specific types made at other shops compared to this shop. Our next stop was a cheese shop. It was a very small shop and only half of the tour group, maybe five or six, could enter at a time. When the first half was done looking the other half entered. Alex asked our different tastes and likes and then bought cheese to take with us. The very small butcher shop was the next stop where again about half could enter at a time. Alex pointed out the many cured meats and discussed their ingredients, and then he bought sliced charcuterie meats. From the butcher we headed off to the wine shop. Hear we made our way downstairs into a basement and took seats around a long table. The wine shop poured wine tastes and we sampled all the wares Alex had purchased, fresh baguette, multiple cheeses, and different charcuterie meats. Basically we feasted and discussed the amazing day, it was actually fabulous! The tour was not inexpensive, the cost was just short of $600 for our group of four. That said, we all felt it was well worth the price we paid! When we met him he advised people if anyone had a lunch reservation they might want to reconsider and he was correct. We were absolutely done eating until dinner as we were so full. We spent close to 4 hours with our guide, and we got a great introduction to the area on our first day. I would have rated the experience 5 stars, however when anyone asked where something was located or the name of a specific shop Alex told us multiple times he would email everyone that night or the next day with information on everything we had done and the tips he gave us. We did not get a follow up mail and could have used the information later in the week. Had Alex not set the expectation I would not have expected it; all considered though, Alex was an excellent guide. I strongly recommend this tour.
Hello and thank you for your kind and detailed review! Reading reviews like yours that include words such as "excellent" and "exceptional" mean so much to us and I'm glad you enjoyed your "feast" with Alexandre. I would like to clarify a few points, in order to avoid confusion for future guests. As our tours emphasize only the highest quality, we visit shops that reflect this. Some of them are quite small and to be respectful of the people who work there and other customers, we sometimes divide the tour into two - most especially when we are more than 6 or 7 people. This happens at one or two shops, but the rest of the time the group is together and most importantly for the grand finale at the wine shop/wine bar. Your tour took place in a private wine cellar, which I guess you could also call a "basement" : ) And yes, as a courtesy, we send an email afterwards so that during the tour you can relax and not worry about taking notes. In the years I have worked with Alexandre, he has religiously sent this within 24 hours. The very few times someone has not received it, they have reached out to me only to discover it ended up in their spam. I sincerely suspect this is the case for you. In any event, thank you for saying you would strongly recommend our tour! Wishing you all the best, Diane Rovner, Bordeaux in Bites Food Tours
