Fun, interesting, and very enjoyable tour. Our guides were Ivil (I'm not very sure how it's spelled, sorry) and Dany. Generally, they take a tour through the last 100 years of the country's history, focusing on the communist era, the reasons that led Bulgaria to become a communist country, what came after, and the consequences that all of that had. All this while we walk through the city, stopping at notable monuments and buildings and explaining how communism was experienced here and how Bulgaria participated in the First and Second World War. It is a fairly complete guide to the country. Furthermore, Ivil gave both the objective version of history and the more subjective and patriotic vision that they usually teach natives in schools, highlighting the fact that they are not informed enough about what happened and about the country's relationship with the rest of the Balkan countries. I cannot forget to mention the ride in the Trabant (or Trabi). Before you get in, they explain a little about how the car works and the reasons behind its design. Afterwards, they take you for a ride in it and, finally, before saying goodbye, you can take some photos both inside and outside the vehicle. As always, at the end of the tour you can ask questions or ask for recommendations. We, personally, asked for suggestions about Bulgarian history books, since there are very few translated from Bulgarian into other languages. Highly recommended experience.
We booked the Communist Trabant Tour with a group of friends on 25th April 2026. We had a wonderful time with Dany and his team. They shared a lot of very insightful and entertaining stories about Sofia and the Communist past. They definitely made it a highlight of our trip to Sofia.
This tour provides a fascinating and balanced history of Bulgaria’s adoption of Communism and the long shadow it has cast
Ivo and Danny have been amazing and very passionate guides on the communism tour. Right from the start, the group connected and shared humor, putting a smile on all our faces. A piece of ancient beauty added to the experience when each of us got a ride in an old Trabant at the very beginning. Ivo shared fascinating, insightful, and perspective-shifting information about communist times and communism itself throughout the entire tour, introducing us to new knowledge as well as ideas we had never encountered before. We highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to take a deep dive and spend a lovely two hours in Sofia. Thank you, Ivo and Danny, for this amazing tour!
Dany our tour guide was excellent! The car was in great shape and a fun part of history. I don’t speak Bulgarian but his English is perfect. The bell memorial that he ends the tour with is a must see!
Fantastic tour with Raban, very knowledgeable, it was a great experience and highly recommended. A lot to see it was supposed to be 2 hours but ended up as 3.
My husband and I had a great time driving around Sofia in Danny's trabant. Danny does a great job telling you about Bulgaria's communist past and you get to make a few stops at some of the historically important sites, but the trabant is the star of the show. When Danny came to pick us up at our hotel there was a Ferrari parked in the drive and the trabant was parked in front of it- everyone was walking right past the Ferrari to take pictures of the trabant! Take a drive around Sofia and see for yourself how fun it is!
Excellent tour - cool, interesting and knowledgeable guide. Adapted tour to suit our interests. Highlight of trip to Sofia. Loved our Trabants 💜💜
Thank you so much Helen, it's so nice to get positive feedback. Enjoy the rest of your stay. Cheers Dany
Beautiful excursion to discover the historical buildings of Sofia and the museum of socialist art. Our guide accompanied us on a very interesting journey on an original trabant kept very well. It's an experience to do
Rado the guide was excellent. The trip lasted over three hours. We were also lucky to see an old cars exhibition in the centre of Sofia
