Excursion not to be missed! Everything fabulous, sea, weather, and kind and cheerful people!
Isla Saona is unmissable, everything is super!
The trip for us started at cap Cana. We had to take 2 buses until our destination. With stops and all it took us two hours to get to the marina. Our bus guides were great. Our main tour guide Nestor was great just a little pushy with the tips. We are great tippers and work based on tips and we understand that not all people tip but it was a little too many times that it was asked. The boat ride and the sandbar were the highlight. They took a bunch of pictures that were able to bargain for a good price. The boat ride they kept the drink flowing and the music was great. The boat went nice and slow even with 12 knot winds and seas around 1-2 feet. They kept close to shore to minimize the elements. The sandbar was crystal clear with tons of starfish everywhere. Then when we got to the island which in my opinion I don’t think we went to an island because we ran the coast the whole time lol. The island was not that great. Tons of rocks that made it difficult to disembark with kids and to enjoy. The food wasn’t bad but we were hungry sooo. They had volleyball going on which we partook in. They were very funny during the tournaments. When it comes to embarking again it was complete mayhem and not controlled whatsoever. People were rushing and pushing around and not as safe with kids but we mad it back safely. Overall good thing to do if you have never done it. Just be well prepared with good footwear.
I loved it. The guide Monkey was super fun. We danced the entire trip on the catamaran. Saona Island is a dream. I recommend it.
Overall, the trip to Saona Island was great. The island itself was beautiful, the people were friendly, and the food was excellent. We had a wonderful time once we arrived. My biggest issue was with the transportation and the way the tour length was communicated. We were told the excursion would be 10 hours, but that did not include all of the transportation time. We left our hotel at 7:30 AM and were first taken to a separate meeting location then to be taken to another bus which then took us to the last stop, then walked to the speedboat departure area. By the time we finally arrived at Saona Island, it was around 3½ hours after our initial departure. The island experience itself was very enjoyable. However, there was not enough water or non-alcoholic drink options available for children. If we had known how long the day would actually be, we would have brought extra drinks and snacks for our kids. The return trip was even more confusing. We made an unexpected stop at a souvenir shop that was never mentioned in the itinerary. After that, we were taken back to the meeting location, switched buses, were then told to get off and get into a van, and later told to get back on the bus. The transportation logistics felt disorganized and poorly communicated throughout the day. We did not arrive back at our hotel until 8:30 PM, making it a 13-hour day rather than the 10 hours we were expecting. Despite the transportation issues, the island was beautiful and the staff and locals were wonderful. I would still recommend the trip, but the tour company should do a much better job explaining the full transportation process and the actual total time required. Had we known what to expect, we still would have gone, but we could have planned accordingly and brought additional drinks and snacks for our children.
The trip to Saona Island is well worth it, no doubt. The island is beautiful and the natural pool is also an amazing place. However, the translation was bad, and that was the great negative point of the experience. We were picked up at the hotel at 7:30, as agreed. But instead of going directly to Bayahibe, we were taken to another place to change vehicles. Then we boarded an old and poorly kept bus, which took about 3 hours to reach the destination. So we only boarded the catamaran at 10:30. On the return happened exactly the same thing: 3 more hours of travel, making the day very tired. In addition, the stay in Saona Island and the natural pool was relatively short. The tour itself is very beautiful, the guide was nice and worth the experience, but the excess time spent on transport ends up compromising the enjoyment of the day.
Saona Island is a beautiful place to visit. However, the people in charge were very disorganized and took too long to bring us to the island. We were supposed to be picked up at 7:10, they showed up late. Then we were transferred to a bigger bus with more people. Our guide "Monkey"was amazing and it's unfortunate that the transportation wasn't the best...too long picking up and dropping off people from different resorts.
First to be picked up (that’s fine) however, numerous stops were made with long wait times for other people. Then stops were made to support businesses and we had to switch buses at a gas station. Finally made it to a bus lot with a 5 min walk to the port with a massive crowd piling on the boat. It was a long boat ride that included transferring to a speedboat. Finally got to the island and it was crowded! The buffet food was dry and there were barely any beach chairs available. The masseuse and jewelry vendors were annoying and constantly bothering us. Also, the island had a big pile of trash bags in the middle of the beach. Finally time to go back (couldn’t wait), it was about a 45 min speed boat ride back to port. Then we had to wait for the tour group and our bus came last. We got back to the hotel last and were out all day for about 12 hours!!! We should have stayed at our resort instead.
The island is beautiful, the buffet is good, the only thing I didn't like is the transfers. A lot of time is wasted on transportation and the transport guides are disorganized. They don't explain that we had to take 2 cars
The crowd was overwhelming and the music was way too loud. The transit process was a mess; we were moved from one shuttle to another without anyone explaining what was going on. To top it off, our host wouldn't stop asking for tips. The island is crowed and no where to sit with 2.5-3 hours on the beach. There are old and broken lounge chairs. when it was time to go, it seems everyone was ready and pushing and shoving to get in a smaller and different boat going back. Very frustrating experience.
