Olá Colombo! Estamos na Plaza Colon, também conhecida como Columbus Square, olhando para uma imponente estátua de Cristóvão Colombo. Então, o que Colombo está fazendo aqui? Simples: ele foi o primeiro explorador espanhol a reivindicar a ilha para o trono espanhol! Ele chamou a ilha de San Juan Buatista e, embora seu nome posteriormente tenha mudado para Porto Rico, o nome “San Juan” permaneceu para esta cidade.
Você não pode perder a enorme fortaleza à frente. Esse é o Castillo San Cristobal, a maior fortificação construída pelos espanhóis nas Américas. Atravesse na faixa de pedestres e siga em direção ao centro de visitantes da entrada principal do Castillo, caso pretenda visitá-lo. Continue andando e olhe para a esquerda. Vê aquele aglomerado de árvores com duas torres altas projetando-se acima? Atrás deles está escondido um edifício de pedra castanha com telhado triangular: o Polvorín de Santa Elena, construído em 1783. Este edifício serviu durante muito tempo como paiol de pólvora. A pólvora para travar todas aquelas batalhas contra os holandeses e os ingleses tinha que vir de algum lugar! Hoje em dia, Polverin de Santa Elena funciona como escritório do Serviço de Parques Nacionais!
Diretamente à nossa frente está o Castillo San Felipe del Morro, mais conhecido como El Morro. É provavelmente a fortificação mais épica de Porto Rico e de grande parte das Américas. A construção deste castelo começou em 1539, e ainda bem que assim aconteceu! Lembra-se de todos aqueles ataques a San Juan? Eles teriam conseguido sem dúvida se não fosse por este forte.
Continue andando enquanto ouve. Mais à frente e à esquerda, você vê aquela estrutura cinza e branca com o topo preto, projetando-se acima do muro de pedra? Quase parece um farol, mas é a Bateria Santa Elena, também conhecida como Battery Guardhouse!
Continue andando enquanto ouve. Olhe à esquerda, para o enorme prédio amarelo com três bandeiras hasteadas no topo. Este é o Quartel de Ballaja, um antigo quartel militar e a última obra de construção em grande escala dos espanhóis na cidade. O segundo andar hoje abriga o Museu das Américas.
Faça uma pausa aqui. Observe a placa à direita para Casa Blanca. Antes de ser uma casa, foi na verdade a primeira fortificação de San Juan. Construída em 1521, protegeu os colonos contra revoltas dos indígenas Taino. Para visitar, passe pelo portão à sua direita. Clique em Saiba mais para obter informações sobre admissões.
Confira a alta catedral branca à frente, à esquerda. Esta é a Catedral Basílica Menor de San Juan Bautista, a igreja mais antiga das Américas! Parece que nenhuma calamidade é suficientemente má para abalar estes alicerces!
Continue caminhando por esta rua de paralelepípedos sombreada e colorida. No final da rua há um enorme portal de pedra. Não é outro senão a Puerta de San Juan: o único portão remanescente da cidade velha! Centenas de anos atrás, esse portão recebia viajantes na cidade e mantinha os invasores afastados. Passe pelo portão e tenha uma bela vista da água além.
Ao caminhar, olhe para as muralhas da cidade. Em breve você poderá avistar alguns edifícios atrás do muro. Eles constituem La Fortaleza, a fortaleza original da Espanha aqui em San Juan, que remonta a antes da década de 1530. Antes do Castillo San Cristobal, essa era a única coisa que existia entre San Juan e outras nações conquistadoras.

This audio tour was the 1st that I purchased (ever) and my wife and I were extremely pleased. The historical facts were very interesting to learn, and to do it while being right in front of it made it feel grounding since we were in the exact areas with the exact buildings. I like that we got to walk at our own pace. I hurt my back a few months ago and being able to take a break from walking, or stay in areas as long as we wanted made this feel like we were catered to! This was definitely a highlight of visiting PR. I recommend it!

This was a useful tour. I wanted to be a little bit more independent than having to go with a group. The information provided on the audio was very interesting. There is a little bit of a glitch when you walk over the same path the audio kept wanting to restart. I would recommend this guide if you want to do an independent walk, but we did get turned around in a couple of places due to our own errors. Overall, I found it to be very worthwhile for what we wanted for that afternoon. The traffic was really bad in old San Juan so we ended up driving back into town a little bit and taking an Uber back into old San Juan to start the tour

I specifically purchased this tour because I had an electric scooter and could not do other walking tours. San Juan was not accessible by scooter. Many of the sidewalks were not sloped or needed to be worked on. Others with this desire to see the old town but use a wheelchair or scooter need to be aware. We only made it to the 10th stop before we turned around because of the unknown ability to make it up and down sidewalks.

Because of that, there are sections where a scooter may not be able to go easily (or at all), depending on sidewalk conditions, curb ramps, and the area's historic layout. Comprehensive tour of the old San Juan area. Starting point was less than 10 minutes from the cruise port. With short stops along the way, the tour took about 2 hours. We did not spend extra time touring the fort or the castle.

Very good. I saw a lot of walking tour groups. I liked that I could go at my own pace, stop and go see a side attraction or grab a bite to eat, and then start up again.

This was the perfect tour for me because I could move at my own pace. It is heavily focused on military operations and the battle for Puerto Rico.
