Nos anos 70 do século XX, os arquitetos queriam criar áreas residenciais hospitaleiras com a participação dos moradores e outros usuários em resposta ao modernismo de grande escala e cinza da arquitetura da reconstrução após a Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Em 2011, o município de Roterdã organizou a primeira iniciativa da cidade, um instrumento administrativo para estimular a inovação administrativa e a participação cidadã. Os habitantes de Rotterdam foram chamados a apresentar projetos que animassem a cidade e melhorassem a qualidade de vida na cidade. Um montante de 4 milhões foi reservado da iniciativa da cidade para implementar o projeto.

antes da Segunda Guerra Mundial não havia Estação Central, mas havia quatro estações ao redor do centro. Em 1957, a estação central foi inaugurada em sua localização atual. Em 2004 foi iniciada a reforma total da estação central, em 2014 foi entregue o resultado final atual. A antiga estação não conseguia mais lidar com o fluxo de passageiros.
O laurenskerk é o único remanescente do centro medieval de Roterdã. O laurenskerk é um cruzamento entre uma igreja salão (todos os edifícios iguais em altura) e uma basílica cruciforme (aqui as torres laterais são mais baixas que a torre principal). A igreja foi construída entre 1449 e 1525.
A fachada interna do Markthal é coberta com uma obra de arte de 11.000 m² (dois campos de futebol) de Arno Coenen e Iris Roskam, intitulada Hoorn des Overvloeds. Este título refere-se à Cornucópia, um chifre da mitologia grega que simboliza abundância e saturação. A obra de arte mostra frutas, vegetais, grãos, peixes, flores e insetos muito ampliados. Ao fundo você também pode ver o Laurenskerk com torre.
Na Idade Média, um dos 10 portões da cidade que Rotterdam tinha aqui. Na década de 30, a cidade de Rotterdam cresceu rapidamente e o portão ficou no caminho, pois eles queriam um fluxo melhor para o tráfego crescente. Foi decidido mover o portão cerca de 100 metros (uma demolição do portão encontrou muita resistência). Durante o bombardeio na Segunda Guerra Mundial, o portão foi severamente danificado, um ano após o bombardeio o portão foi demolido, porque não podia mais ser concluído. Algumas obras ornamentais do antigo portão foram salvas e incorporadas às paredes dos prédios da esquina da praça da prefeitura.
Não muito do centro histórico permaneceu intacto durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, mas o Oude Haven é, felizmente, um desses lugares históricos que foram preservados. No porto encontram-se barcos antigos históricos e encantadores, enquanto no cais encontra-se uma mistura colorida de edifícios.
A casa branca foi construída em 1889 e com 43 metros de altura foi o primeiro arranha-céu da Bélgica, Holanda e Luxemburgo.
Atualmente, o encontro é um dos hotspots em Roterdã. Há muitos cafés, restaurantes e lojas de roupas. É também uma rua onde se trata um pouco de ver e ser visto.

We were able to set the start time for our tour & when we met Jess, she was able to customise what we wanted to see & do. Jess contacted us the night before to confirm our tour/time/meeting point & that morning, she gave us more specifics & was on time. Jess’ English was impeccable! She had so much knowledge & was able to give us a personal touch. What was included was just enough to get a Dutch experience including riding the metro & trams, sampling Dutch fries, going through the cube apts, walking through the old port, seeing various architectures building etc. We couldn’t have asked for more. What a treat it was!
We enjoyed this walking tour with Jess as she gave us a good amount of Rotterdam history. She met us at the port and also brought us back with a few train rides and a good deal of walking along the way. We made a stop for coffee/latte, however there was no lunch or street food as advertised when we booked. The tour took about 4 hours.

the tour guide arrived over 15 min late and told us he lost his bag on the subway with his wallet, keys, and tickets. He could not take us on the tour. He left and came back 1/2 hr later saying that he accepted his fate and could start the tour but would extend 1 hr later than planned. We were very disappointed and did not get the tour. we called viator to ask for our money back. the local tour company did not answer their phone- we had hoped that they could send a replacement .

This was an extremely rare and unforeseen situation. Our guide unfortunately lost his bag on the metro while traveling to the meeting point. Despite the stress of losing his wallet, keys, and personal belongings, he came to meet your group, explained the situation transparently, and asked whether a short delay would be acceptable while he contacted the public transport company's Lost & Found service. After returning within the agreed timeframe, he was fully prepared to conduct your private tour and even offered to extend it by an additional hour so you would still receive the complete experience. Unfortunately, by then your group had decided not to continue. We also apologize that you were unable to reach us by phone. We missed Viator's call and immediately tried calling back, but were unable to get through the automated phone system. Jamal was worth a 5 star review for personality & knowledge. Really a great guide. Only reason for 4 star was that the tour was to include a street food lunch which we didn't get. There ended up being 8 of our friends that joined our group.

Mo was our guide and he was incredible. We knew very little about the city and learned so much. The tour was perfect for us. We had an infant with us and the timing and Mo, our guide, was a perfect fit. The tour size gave us time and attention to ask questions and not feel rushed. Jamaal was an excellent guide on this three + hour walking tour of Rotterdam. He was very knowledgeable, courteous, and prompt. We learned a great deal about the city, its history, people and culture. Two highlights that we especially enjoyed were the Cube houses and the Market Hall. I would highly recommend this trip, as well as Jamaal, if you would like to spend a few hours learning all about this historic and beautiful city!
