This was a friendly informative class and market tour, featuring foods unique to Penang Nyonya culture!
Wonderful morning learning so much about Nyonya food and culture. Food was delicious and our guides were excellent.
Mok and his wife Amy put together an absolutely amazing experience. It was fast paced, rich information, delicious food and stories too! Would genuinely do again as they had so much knowledge and insight to share.
Great experience, well organised and exceptional guides and cooking teachers. I wish I didn't on first day in penang because not only you learnt to cook but also learnt the history or penang and expert advice on how best to experience our stay in penang
This experience was fun and we learnt a lot about the local food scene. The hosts were amazing and other guests were nice.
Mr Mok and his wife, Amy, area amazing hosts. Mr Mok took us around the market to show us where locals buy raw ingredients, he is very passionate about durians and share a few tricks when choosing, he is also very pleasant and friendly when interacting with us and the people work at the market. Mr Mok share many interesting Nyonya histories. Amy is a very lovely chef, she told us tips and tricks as we cook along, her family satay recipe is delicious, the satay sauce is the essence of it all!! Amy also taught us to cook the char kuey teow, and it was just amazing, that sauce mix and the way to use to wok to fry up the noodles plus that egg, I truly enjoy every bite of this dish! We also made coconut jam from scratch which was so much better than any stall we ate from cos it’s just freshly made! The coconut jam went with a glutinous rice cake steamed with coconut milk and pair with some very sweet jackfruit as dessert! This was a lovely cooking experience as we not only learn how to cook the famous char kuey teow, satay and coconut jam, we also learn about the history here in Penang and Malaysia. Amy also shared her family photos with us and showing us how the traditional Nyonya clothing look like, that was such a sweet moment. Highly recommend this class!
his was a brilliant experience - the market tour was incredibly insightful and we stopped off for a lovely breakfast. The cooking class used some of the ingredients we had picked up en route. It was super well organised and we learnt a lot from Amy who patiently showed us how to make each dish, assisted by a lovely team of helpers. We enjoyed our delicious food and not a single dish to wash up! Mok was the perfect host. I highly recommend this tour - it was the right balance of leaning and hands on fun. Thanks everyone and for sharing all the recipes to try at home too 👩🏻🍳
If you are enthusiastic to learn about Malaysia, in particular Nyonya cooking...this is probably a great entree into that learning
I had such an amazing time at the Penang Cooking Class — it was truly one of the highlights of my trip! The experience started with a visit to the wet market led by Simon and Mr. Mok, who were incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. They explained the local ingredients in detail and gave us great insight into Penang’s food culture. It was fascinating to see how locals shop and learn about the fresh herbs, spices, and produce that make Malaysian cuisine so special. The cooking session with Mr. Mok and Amy was just as fantastic. They were patient, friendly, and made the whole process fun and easy to follow. Even as someone who isn’t an expert cook, I felt completely comfortable and learned so much. Their guidance and tips were incredibly helpful, and they made sure everyone was involved. We made spring rolls, curry chicken, and char koay teow — and everything was absolutely delicious! My personal favorite was the char koay teow. It tasted so authentic and flavorful, and I couldn’t believe I had made it myself! I can’t wait to try recreating it at home. Overall, this class was well-organized, hands-on, and full of warmth and hospitality. If you’re visiting Penang and love food, this is an absolute must-do. Highly recommend!
What a wonderful experience this was and if I could rate it higher I would! From the moment I was picked up by Mr Mok at my hotel I felt welcome and relaxed and ready to learn. The market tour was so immersive and informative and I learnt so much as we purchased our ingredients for the class. The breakfast was lovely and another great experience to sit amongst locals. The class itself was amazing. We cooked so many dishes which were all so delicious. I was travelling with a friend and they packed up food for her to try which was a lovely touch. I’ve since been sent all the recipes, videos and photos from our class which will be wonderful to look back on when I try to recreate the dishes at home.
