O Great Meteoron Monastery é o maior e mais antigo de todos. Foi chamado o mosteiro que estava "suspenso no ar" (meteoro), por causa da formação da rocha gigantesca em cima da qual foi construída. O Grande Mosteiro de Meteoro foi fundado por Santo Atanásio, o Meteorito, que foi o primeiro fundador do mosteiro e o organizador do koenovion sistemático. Por esta razão, a fundação deste mosteiro é considerada um ponto de viragem, ou melhor ainda, o início do monastismo organizado na Santa Meteora. Hosios Athanasios nasceu por volta de 1302 na cidade medieval de New Patras, hoje Hypati e seu nome leigo era Andronikos.
Totalmente construído dentro de uma grande cavidade de uma rocha, este mosteiro é muito indicativo do seu tipo, em comparação com os que são geralmente vistos nos picos de rochas. Um monge sob o nome de Nilos, no ano de 1367 dC, juntamente com outro monge chamado Cyprianus tornou-se os fundadores e os proprietários do mosteiro. Foi destruído em 1809, quando o rebelde local e herói Papathymios Vlahavas foi preso aqui pelo exército turco de Ali Pasha. O caminho para este mosteiro é muito simples e agradável.
O Santo Mosteiro de Varlaam é o segundo maior mosteiro. Está localizado em frente ao Grande Mosteiro de Meteoro e foi fundado em meados do século XIV pelo exercitante Hosios Varlaam. O elegante mosteiro Catholicon foi construído em honra de Agioi Pantes em 1541-42, por dois irmãos de Ioannina, os monges-sacerdotes Hosioi Theophanes e Nectarios the Apsarades. A igreja principal foi decorada em 1548. Baseada em critérios estilísticos, esta magnífica pintura de parede é atribuída ao famoso hagiógrafo de Tebas, Frago Catelano.
O Santo Mosteiro de São Nicolau de Anapafsas é o primeiro mosteiro que encontramos em nosso caminho para o Santo Meteora e foi fundado no final do século XIV. Great Hiking Tour. Authentic! :-) But especially I want to thank Chris. He was great! Talking with each of us (kids and adults). Explaining history and geology of the Meteora. I booked the Meteora Hiking Tour, and I ended up being the only person on the tour that day, so it felt like a private experience. It was absolutely incredible! Our family recently visited Greece, and one of the highlights of our trip was a small-group hiking tour with Visit Meteora. Chris led our group on this hike and it was my favourite experience in Meteora! Beautiful countryside and views of the monasteries and the hike was fairly easy, some steep and slippery spots but it was a perfect experience if you love hiking and nature as well as the stunning views, and want to visit the largest monastery as well.

We did a hike to The Great Meteoron Monastery with our guide Christos, and it was absolutely amazing. Christos gave personal attention to everyone in the group and was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. We learned so much along the way, and his enthusiasm truly made the experience special. Our boys loved it too, which made the day even more memorable for our whole family. It was a magical half-day walk into a dreamlike landscape of colors, scents, shapes, and history. The trail network is vast, like a natural maze—definitely something you shouldn’t explore without a local guide, as it’s easy to get lost. Our guide Chris was fluent in English, kind, and very knowledgeable, answering every question with ease. The trail itself was easy, yet offered breathtaking views throughout.

We had a very enjoyable experience, guided by Chris, who was very well-informed in his knowledge of the history of the area, the monasteries and the flora and fauna en route. As we were the only people on the tour, we also enjoyed the personal conversation en route! The path was not difficult or too strenuous and the scenic views were stunning.
