Very beautiful experience, very beautiful site, and a very beautiful concept! Thank you to our guide who, despite their recent arrival, managed to convey the beautiful values of the site to us! Good luck to all the teams in continuing this great challenge
I’m not sure I can describe how my heat sung at this venue The combination of information and hands on experience was wonderful. I am so in love with buffalo! Plus I’ve now officially milked a buffalo An amazing project reaching out to local people and helping animals too. Inspiring Lovely food and lots of animal experience- the people are delightful. The young woman tickling a huge buffalo on her jowls was so sweet! I want to work here Do go.
The Laos Buffalo Dairy is an amazing experience you just can’t miss! Recommend doing this after Kuang Si Falls, first thing in the morning. There are two tour options. I recommend the more expansive one that includes buffalo cheesecake, caramel ice cream, buffalo coffee, and two bottles of milk to feed the young buffalo. It’s a little pricier than other things in Laos, but given everything the operation is doing for the community, it felt like money well spent. When you hear about the facility's broader educational mission: teaching local farmers how to diversify their income, maintain healthy livestock, and improve genetic diversity through careful breeding, you’ll be as impressed as we were. • We fed the pigs, rabbits, goats, and of course, buffalo. • We tried milking the buffalo. It is considerably harder than it looks. We each managed a tiny amount, which is apparently enough to briefly satisfy the resident cat, who has worked out exactly where to station himself during demonstrations. Smart animal. • We brushed and pet the adult buffaloes, then moved on to the babies — equally adorable and significantly more affectionate. One in particular attached herself completely to my partner and refused to be redirected toward anyone else. She stayed glued to his side. • Bottlefeeding came next. The recipients were young buffalo rather than calves, and they were passionate about it — several crowding in, jostling for position, not above a little pushing. We each fed a few of them to spread it around. • Finally: the goats. They were crazy. But it was hilarious. We got a chance to meet Susie — one of the founders who shared their story. It’s remarkable and a bit emotional to hear. The model is elegant. They rent buffalo from local farmers and breed them for better genetic health. The farmers get their animals back along with the offspring, which they can sell. The dairy gets the milk and produces cheese, ice cream, cake, and other products sold locally. All farmer education — vaccination, animal care, breeding practices — is provided free of charge. More recently they've added cassava leaves to the curriculum: treated correctly, the leaves lose their natural toxicity and become a high-protein food source with a long shelf life. Processing them also prevents farmers from burning them, which would release those toxins into the air. The whole operation is a quiet, compound act of community building, environmental stewardship, and economic empowerment. We ended at a small welcome area where everything is made with buffalo milk, and it’s all remarkably light and delicious. A fabulous ending to a great tour!
A must-visit for everyone! Thank you for your incredible impact on the community and animals alike. Best of luck with everything!
Fantastic tour by Rachel. Amazing vision by the owners. Ethical, giving a lot back to the community. Well worth a visit.
We loved our tour of the dairy. It is great that they support the local Communities, educational programs and the animals are so well cared for, it’s a sustainable and ethical operation. Our tour was educational ans completely interactive. We got to feed pigs, rabbits and water buffalo. Gave belly rubs to black pigs and fed buffalo calves. Honestly, can’t recommend highly enough. We ALL loved it!
My wife and I did Tour #4 of the Buffalo Dairy just outside Luang Prabang. This was one of the highlights of our Laos trip. We learned much about the operation, from beginning to the present, as well as the involvement in the local community, as it strives to educate both farmers and children in everything from raising buffalo to nutrition. Part of our tour included participating in a class to teach local children English, a delicious lunch with cheeses made from Buffalo milk, preparing snacks for the kids, and tasting the buffalo ice cream. We loved every minute of it! For transportation, we hired a driver for the day who I also recommend, Mr. Vong who can be reached on WhatsApp (020 5547 1966). He speaks English so u can text him for a very reasonable price.
We loved what this place was about, ethical, educational, fun, supporting local people Families and farmers. The animals are so well cared for.. We stopped by this place with our 4 year old in the afternoon and was the highlight of our day, to meet the people that started this venture and are personally taking tours, learning about how they begun and how the learnt along the way was truly admirable.. We need to see more of this around the world.. Take the tour get a chance to milk a buffalo, (something I didn't think I'd hear myself say) meet the rabbits goats and pigs.. and sample the produce.. lovely find..
All four of us had the best time! You can milk the buffalo, brush and feed them, you can also give the baby buffalo milk out of the bottle! We also fed and stroked all the pigs, rabbits and goats. After we sat in the cafe and tried the buffalo ice cream which was delicious!!
Such a great experience & the guy that showed us round was very knowledgeable. They also had rabbits, pigs & goats & they were so well looked after & kept so clean. You get to milk a buffalo & brush & stroke them & even give the pigs a belly rub. It was so lovely & well worth a visit.
