My visit to Kumartuli with Kaushik Sir was one of the highlights of my time spent in Kolkata. Watching the artisans create the idols was wonderful, but the experience went far beyond that. We explored the narrow lanes and learnt about the history of the neighbourhood. We also discussed how traditions have been preserved across multiple generations. One of my favourite parts of the tour was walking past the grand old mansions that still stand in the area. Many are now faded and partly abandoned, yet they seem to tell incredible stories about Kolkata's past. Kaushik Sir brought those stories to life and helped me imagine what the neighbourhood must have been like many years ago. The views of the Ganges along the way were really beautiful and added another dimension to the walk. The combination of art, history, architecture and riverside life made the entire experience feel very special. Kaushik Sir is an excellent teacher and storyteller. He explains things clearly, encourages questions and never rushes you. He was punctual, courteous and cheerful throughout the tour. As a solo female traveller, I felt completely safe and at ease from beginning to end. I would highly recommend this walk to anyone who wants to understand the real character of Kolkata rather than simply see its attractions!
Kaushik was an excellent guide - touring Kumartuli with him was a wonderful experience! When I needed to change the tour date by a day due to unfortunate circumstances, he was incredibly accommodating and kind. Though I was originally planning to attend with my mom, I ended up going solo. The 2-3 hour tour was fantastic. I learned so much about Kolkata's past, the Kumartuli region, and Kumartuli Ghat. Even as a solo female traveler, Kaushik made me feel completely safe and was respectful throughout. He even helped me purchase merchandise for family and friends back home. Highly recommend this walk to anyone visiting Kolkata!
Dear Thushara, Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share your experience. I was glad we could make the date adjustment work and that you were still able to join the tour despite the change in plans. It was a pleasure exploring Kumartuli with you and sharing the stories behind the artisans, the neighbourhood and the traditions that make this corner of Kolkata so special. I'm especially happy that you felt comfortable and at ease throughout the experience. One of my aims is to ensure that every traveller—whether travelling alone or with family—can explore the city with confidence while experiencing its culture in an authentic way. Thank you as well for being such an engaged and curious participant. I hope the souvenirs you took home carry fond memories of Kolkata and the remarkable craftsmen who create them. Wishing you many more wonderful journeys ahead, and should you find yourself back in Kolkata, there will always be more stories waiting. Warm regards, Kaushik
A quiet place where you can watch the artists doing their craft. But also a place with poor living conditions and derelict buildings. My guide Kaushik took a lot of time and also showed and explained angles that are remote. There are no pictures of these either, but deep impressions. A valuable conclusion to my trip to Kolkata with another very good guidebook.
Thank you for your thoughtful and nuanced reflection. Kumartuli is a place that reveals both beauty and reality side by side, and I appreciate how perceptively you engaged with it. I’m glad we could go beyond the obvious and explore its quieter, less-seen corners together. Conversations like ours make these walks especially meaningful for me as well. Wishing you many more enriching journeys ahead—and perhaps another in Kolkata someday. Warm regards, Kaushik
It was a steady, meaningful walk into the bylanes of Kumartulli, where history and present coexist peacefully. I've always wanted to visit Kolkata during Pujo, but my guide Kaushik ji told me this off-season is better. We are not bothering anyone with their time-sensitive deliveries. Kaushik ji also explains the sourcing, disposal, and regeneration of the all-organic materials used for idol-making. The artists are welcoming, relaxed, and generous with their answers, and photos are welcome. Towards the end of the tour, we look at some of the ever-present decaying buildings, glorious in their past, but ignored in the present. Overall, a relaxed walk full of insights and knowledge. 100% recommend
Being a women and solo traveller, I would highly recommend this tour. It was very safe and guide was very knowledgeable. I wish I had time for the heritage culture tour as well. I will definitely recommend this tour to my friends and family visiting Kolkata as well!
