This Marian pilgrimage center evokes the apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta, which occurred in 1917 and recognized in 1930. The place was a rural property, called Cova da Iria, and belonged to Lúcia's parents, who donated it to the sanctuary. It was here that five of the six apparitions took place. The Sanctuary includes the Chapel of Apparitions, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Prayer Room and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity. Complementing the Sanctuary are the Retreat Houses of Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Paul VI Pastoral Center. It is one of the most important Marian shrines belonging to the Catholic Church in the world and one of the main international destinations for religious tourism, receiving around six million visitors per year. It was visited by Popes Paul VI (1967), John Paul II (1982, 1991 and 2000), Benedict XVI (2010) and Francis (2017 and 2023).
A few minutes from the Sanctuary we have Valinhos, a small village where children and their families lived and where they left to take the animals to graze, extremely well preserved. We had a lovely day trip with Anastasia to the various places at a comfortable pace in a car. We were able to spend a good amount of time on our own at Fatima which was the main focus for the trip. We learned a lot from Anastasia about the various locations we visited as well as Lisbon and Portugal. Overall a great day outside of Lisbon to experience different parts of Portugal.

Fatima is an ancient center of Christianity in Western Europe. Amazing experience! Yesterday we did a private tour with the guide João visiting Fatima, Valinhos, Nazaré and Óbidos, and it has been, without doubt, the best private excursion we have had in all our trips around the world. João was simply spectacular: super punctual, friendly, fun, patient and with an impressive knowledge of the history, culture and curiosities of Portugal. He answered all our questions in detail, recommended the best sites and even shared stories from Guatemala and Nicaragua, so it was a lovely cultural exchange. Fantastic tour of several Portugal cities and their sites. João picked us up at our hotel early in the morning, and we spent the entire day checking out all the import sites from Fatima to Nazare and Obidos. João was a wealth of knowledge about everything throughout Portugal, as well as the religious and cultural sites. We were dropped back off at our hotel in the early evening. What a great tour!! There are no words to describe how much we loved this tour. Anastasiya is a Sweet Cover and an excellent guide. We went to Valinhos and Fatima, with a pass through beautiful Nazareth. The friendly Vila de Óbidos got to the final with the purchase of the mandatory ginjinha. But the highlight of the tour was the Battle Monastery, which is of unparalleled beauty. We were full of hearts and our phones were full of photos. Five stars.

Me and my family enjoyed this tour immensely. Anastasia was great! She is very knowledgeable of the history of all the places and also shared a lot of great stories that you wouldn’t normally read in the books. She was also very flexible and accommodating with the time you want to spend in each of the places. And she provided a lot of tips and suggestions on other places and products. She went above and beyond. We will definitely be booking more tours with the tour operator in the future. If you’re looking for a day tour that allows you to cover a lot of places without being rushed, I highly recommend this!
