O Santuário de Fátima, formalmente intitulado pela Igreja Católica como Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima, é um santuário mariano dedicado a Nossa Senhora de Fátima, localizado no lugar da Cova da Iria, na cidade de Fátima, município de Ourém, em Portugal. O Santuário de Fátima é, por excelência, um local de peregrinação cristã e devoção católica, preservando a memória dos acontecimentos que levaram à sua fundação, nomeadamente as aparições de Nossa Senhora aos três pastorinhos – Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco e Jacinta Marto – em 1917. A sua magnitude e relevância do ponto de vista religioso é de há muito consensualmente reconhecida, nacional e internacionalmente. Por vontade expressa da Santa Sé Apostólica, este é um Santuário Nacional. É também um dos mais importantes santuários marianos do mundo pertencentes à Igreja Católica.
Fátima é uma cidade no centro de Portugal que alberga o Santuário de Fátima, um local de peregrinação católica. A Capelinha das Aparições marca o local onde alegadamente a Virgem Maria apareceu em 1917. A Nazaré é uma vila com forte tradição piscatória, onde se encontra uma das mais típicas praias da região Centro do país. A vila que atualmente conhecemos só existe desde o século XVIII, já que até essa altura, toda a zona baixa da vila estava coberta pelo mar que ali chegava. Apenas existia o Sítio onde se tem, hoje, uma magnífica vista para a praia
O fenômeno das ondas gigantes costuma acontecer no inverno europeu, entre os meses de outubro e março, às vezes em abril. Porém, dependem de condições do mar adequadas, aliadas a tempestades no Atlântico Norte e a direção do vento. Entre este período de outubro a março costuma acontecer entre 1 e 6 fenômenos de ondas gigantes em Nazaré. Para viajar para lá e ter a certeza de ver o fenômeno não é tarefa fácil. É preciso ficar de 2 a 3 semanas na região esperando ou viajar às pressas quando está acontecendo ou com uma previsão mais certeira.

What a pilgrimage we had to Fatima and Nazareth. Our guide John was knowledgeable and personable. We knew we were lucky to have him drive us to our destinations. This tour was from a company called Record Tours. Our tour guide was an older gentleman named John who talked to us during most of the drive about Portuguese culture and traditions, and then directed us to special points of interest in Fatima and Nazarene. John has obviously made some special connections over the years because he got us into places other tour guides didn’t visit. We were so happy that we did this tour on our first day in Portugal because it gave us a great introduction to the country.
