Chefchaouen foi fundada em 1471 como uma pequena Kasbah (fortaleza) por Moulay Ali Ibn Rashid Al-Alami, um descendente de Abd As-Salam al-Alami e Idris I, e através deles, do profeta islâmico Maomé. Al-Alami fundou a cidade para combater as invasões portuguesas do norte de Marrocos. Junto com as tribos Ghomara da região, muitos moriscos e judeus se estabeleceram aqui após a Reconquista Espanhola (Inquisição) na época medieval. A paleta azul da cidade impulsiona sua origem naquela mesma época, dado que os exilados judeus chegados pintaram suas casas de azul para refletir sua divindade - uma tradição que continuou através dos séculos. Não foi até recentemente que os tons azuis se espalharam do bairro judeu (o Mellah) para as outras partes da Medina (a cidade velha) tornando-se a "perla azul de Marrocos que conhecemos hoje.

Construída no século 15, a Grande Mesquita de Chefchaouen foi construída por ordem do filho do fundador da cidade. Possui um minarete octogonal, que é um pouco incomum quando comparado aos muitos minaretes quadrados que geralmente encerram as inúmeras mesquitas do país. A forma foi influenciada por estilos andaluces, trazidos para o país por muçulmanos da Espanha. Após uma pausa para um delicioso almoço Chaouni, seu guia de turismo irá acompanhá-lo à Mesquita Espanhol, ou Mesquita Bouzafaar, para desfrutar da maravilhosa vista sobre Chefchaouen de um terraço exterior. Situada a dois metros 650 de Ras El-Ma, a Mesquita Espanhol fica em cima de uma colina. As ruínas evocativas têm vista para a cidade, e é um ótimo ponto de vista a partir do qual admirar os arredores. A mesquita branca foi construída nos anos 1920 pelos Espanholes. Não conseguiu atrair adeptos locais; nunca foi usado como uma mesquita. Consequentemente, caiu em desordem. Mais tarde foram realizadas obras de restauração. Como uma mesquita não-funcional, todos os visitantes podem dar uma olhada no interior. Também é chamada de Mesquita Boujaafar, e a palavra Boujaafar refere-se ao funcionário espanhol que foi responsável pela construção da mesquita e que tinha um bico extraordinariamente grande. We were so looking forward to our excursion to Chefchaouen. This excursion from Tangier was advertised as 8-9 hours long. And supposed to have started at 9 am but Nabil called & asked if we could start at 9am. Sure . Abdul arrived at our hotel close to 930am. Off we drove with 1 stop for bathroom & photo . When we arrived around 2 1/2 hours later , we found out we had another tour guide . That was fine, Mohammed walked us around town & in some shops he knew the shop keepers. We walked down some notable streets , took pictures and around hour & 15 , Mohammed dropped us off at a restaurant for lunch & told us he’d pick us up after . We were okay with that. Close to 45 min later, he picks us up & we walk down another few streets towards the area where Abdul is going to pick us up to bring us back to hotel in Tangier. Abdul did just that, no conversation , no asking if we needed rest stop along the way, he appeared to be in a great hurray to get back to Tangier. We were back at our hotel after 6 hours & 15 minutes , ( not what we thought we signed up for ). We didn’t need to spend all that money for a drive & lunch ( that we paid for on top of tour). I’ve never written a bad review but thought I should share our experience . I’m sorry I had to do this
The experience in Chefchaouen is must to try- Driver( Abdul) drives so smoothly while the road is quite curvy. And the local guide( Mohammed) is very knowledgeable to guide the tour smoothly as the local who has been living chefchaouen so long time. We enjoyed the great , quiet spot for the photo while we were in bustling area. Please allocate extra budget to grab the artwork, craft as you can only get the quality in this tour. We enjoyed every single moment- definitely will be back.

Everything was punctual and well-organised. From a friendly and knowledgable driver to an amazing tour guide Mustafa in the medina.
Everything went smoothly from start to finish. Nabil met us at the train station with the driver, Abdul. They were both polite, helpful and accommodating!! Our drive to Chefchaouen was pleasant, relaxing and scenic. We made 1 stop along the way! Our tour guide, Mustafa, met us in Chefchaouen and gave us an excellent tour with a very nice pace! We never felt rushed. He spoke English well and pointed out all of the impt areas of interest to us. He waited patiently as we shopped a bit and we never felt pressured! After we stopped for lunch, he met back up with us, again on time and we completed our tour! Our driver, again with perfect timing, returned us safely to our hotel, despite some traffic backups! Overall a very pleasant, educational and relaxing day with perfect weather!!

Great experience , and funny guide , speaks great English and informative , Hicham is great person , Bilal the driver is great person and we like him so much as well, and we have met , the main person who arranged everything , I think his name is Nabeel is great person as well.
While we had booked a tour to Chefchaoun from Tangier it turned into a private tour of Tangier as we were told by the guide the night before there was not enough time to travel round trip from Tangier to Chefchaouen and guarantee a return to our ship in time for it’s 9 pm departure. Our guide, “Chop Chop” was an excellent guide. He was courteous, polite, knowledgeable and knew every corner of Tangier. He took us to places tourists don’t typically go and arranged a delicious Moroccan lunch for us. We avoided most of the crowds visiting typical places in Tangier. We would highly recommend him
We had a great experience with our guide from Tangia to Chefchaouen. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and showed us some amazing hidden spots in the Blue City that we would not have found on our own. His local insight really made the visit special. The driver who picked us up from our hotel in Tangia was prompt and drove us back to the ferry on time. Highly recommend!
My husband and I were looking forward to go to Morocco and we were researching different tour guide options. We booked trips on two days. The first was to Chefchauen, the blue city. We were met at arrival and driven in a comfortable mini-bus to our destination where we were greeted by our lovely guide Mustafa. He is extremely knowledgeable and we had a great time. Almost every time we turned a corner it was an “oh wow!” moment. On the second day we saw Tanger, including the cave of Hercules and the old town. The whole experience was great and professional and I can highly recommend Nabil and his crew

I was visiting my friend in the south of Spain, and we really wanted to see Morocco, but as two women, there is no way we would feel comfortable venturing into North Africa by ourselves. Nabil came highly recommended by her friends at the naval base, and there is a reason he has only 5-star reviews. From start to finish, Nabil will greet you warmly at the ferry, arrange comfortable and safe transportation to every stop in Tangier and Chefchaoen, and chat freely about the history and sites of Tangier with the most warm and welcoming spirit you could imagine! He takes you to the sites you want to see, as well as good local restaurants, and he makes sure you are taken care of. I feel like I got to see the city through the eyes of a native who was somehow also a long-lost friend, and we felt safe and giddy and totally welcomed in a place where we most expected to feel lost, anxious, and hassled. Though brief, this trip was one of the most surprising and soul-filling I have ever taken, and Nabil was a huge part of that. You could wander the city by yourself and try and figure things out, but...why would you? Nabil knows everyone, takes you everywhere, reduces all the stress of travel and shows you the best of his homeland--all with the kindest and most radiant friendliness and desire to give you the best tour possible. Book Nabil today, you won't be sorry. My only complaint is...Nabil, where are these homemade cookies from your mother I was reading about in the other reviews?!
