We were so excited for this tour. It started out with poor communication with Viator the night before the tour. No confirmation of pick up time was sent to us and we needed assistance from the locals to reach the tour guide on shore. He did not speak English well at all. The bridge to the indigenous community was difficult and not completely safe, barely traversed by my sister who has back issues. The building we were brought to for the presentation was full of smoke from an open cooking fire without proper ventilation and I had breathing issues after just a few minutes. There was only open windows for the smoke. We had to leave and I had issues for days after that. Missed the chocolate presentation, however the presenter could not speak English well either, so I'm not sure we missed a lot. Missed lunch as we couldn't stay in the smoke. Very poor conditions even by rustic standards and not worth the price we paid. This one should be refunded, Viator!!
We had an amazing time with this experience. Jonnathan was waiting to pick us up at the port and we headed to Bribri. The visit to Bribri was even more interesting than we thought it would be. We not only tasted cacao in all stages of producing chocolate but Luis, the tribe chief, shared their religious beliefs and what cacao (and nature) means to them. He also gave us a crash course on surviving if we ever got lost in a jungle which was fun and informative. The experience wrapped up with an earthy lunch of chicken and local roots and a sample of different chocolate flavors. We were in Bribri for 4 hours, which in my opinion was a little too long, but that’s not on Jonnathan at all as the pace was dictated by Luis. It had been raining a lot, so we were unable to visit the waterfall, but Jonnathan took us to Punta Uva to see the beach and river instead and we did a short hike. He drove us back to the port with plenty of time to spare. Only thing i regret was forgetting the bug repellent, because the mosquitos are no joke! We like experiences that are more authentic and off the beaten path, so we loved this and recommend it for sure!
Amazing to see the bribri village and be invited into their homes and learn about their unique culture. The chocolate process was meditative and jungle plant tour was enlightening. Food was amazing and host was extremely funny
Unfortunately was not able to take tour. Pickup vehicle had issues resulted in a 3hr delay. We were on a tight schedule so we had to canceled tour.
