Our guide, Marco, was wonderful. He picked us up on time and gave lots of information about the levadas and flora and fauna. Caution: The walk is far more challenging than other reviews would lead one to believe. I cannot fault Marco or the experience at all but it was almost too much for me and took about 6 1/2 hours total. If you don't have very good balance or much experience with rough terrain choose an easier walk. Marco was very helpful to me when I struggled and kept emphasizing that we could take all the time we needed.
Richard is an excellent guide. To start things off, it was raining very heavily that day. We drove up to the location, but it didn't look like it was going to let up. Richard suggested another levada further south where he believed it would not be raining (at least not that hard). We drove there and he was right. During the drive we went through a few small towns and Richard provided some interesting facts. The levada itself was great. I learned so much and we walked for hours. Amazing scenery. Afterwards, Richard suggested visiting the south eastern point of the island for yet another view of the diverse bio-systems of Madeira. This was a great opportunity and a great day.
This was a fantastic walk with spectacular views and scenery. Weather was rainy but still a fab walk under the trees. If you don't have a decent pair of trainers, the walk will hurt your feet as loads of bumpy paths due to roots from trees and the make up of the levedas. Richard was amazing as always and explained the history of the levedas and why they were built where they were. Took loads of awesome photos of hubby and me walking ahead. This walk is truly the most beautiful one, with such good views/waterfalls, and flowers/flauna. However because of how beautiful it is, there are loads of people walking it, which means lots of stopping and starting. It can be quite nerve-racking at points as well due to the sheer drops off the sides, so be careful if you are scared of heights. Overall this is an amazing walk and totally recommend it with the help of the guides.
Richard ,our guide, was courteous , discreet, and very informative on all aspects of Madeiran history - not only of the details of the walk! He arrived punctually, drove safely and took lots of photos and videos to capture our amazing day. There was a lovely surprise on the visit and also the opportunity to see more of the area. His command of English is superb! His company was a great addition to the day..thank you!!
My mum and I had two very different but wonderful private tours in stunning Madeira. For the first tour we went for a Levada hike to Caldeirão Verde. Although it has been a rainy day, the hike itself is packed with water and we were wet to the bones, we had a lot of fun and were very happy at the end of the day. The trek itself isn’t dangerous but because of the rain it was very muddy and slippery. Our guide Richard took very good care of us, provided us with flashlights for the tunnels and made sure we were fine all the time. The waterfall at Caldeirão Verde is just stunning! After this hike we have decided to do a second trip. Richard was wonderful and created an individual tour for us to see as much as possible of the island. We have been at the nuns valley, Câmara de Lobos and plenty viewpoints with stunning sceneries, tasted chestnut pies, Ponchas and Nikitas. It has been a great day. Richard is very well informed about the island, its history, flora and fauna and happy to share all facts and answer all questions. The car has been quite new and we felt safe all the time. We highly recommend to book via this company and ask for Richard. ;)
Indescribable. What a tour. First of all, our guide was a good driver but also, a very informative and happy storyteller. He shared so many facts and stories the whole day. The walk was amazing. Views were perfect. This tour was for sure the best experience in Madeira. Go on this tour if you’ll like to challenge yourself and feel some beautiful nature. ALSO, the guide took many photos of us the whole day. He sent them all for free. What a service.
Superb Service and a very nice guide who explains a lot about the island!! It was raining too much to do the Calderao Verde and Richard was kind enough to adapt the program so that we could do another walk (the tip of San Lourenço) dry this time!! So it was great!! The advantage of Private Service is that there is much more flexibility.
We originally booked another shorter Levada hike, but our guide Richard suggested this tour because the route was more spectacular. Direct hit! We had a lot of fun with him on the private hike and could ask him all sorts of things about the everyday life of the inhabitants. He was very well prepared (including flashlights for the sections with caves), took very good care of us (although the route is really not dangerous) and was very flexible with all our special requests. Highly recommended!
Punctual pick-up by my guide Richard from accommodation in Santana and then a fairly short drive to the start of the hike. The hike along the levada through the ancient Laurisilva forest was lovely, and Richard was a very knowledgeable guide - full of information about the history and functioning of the levadas, the history of Madeira, and of the beautiful (UNESCO-protected) Laurisilva forest. The hike is fairly easy and company policy is that you go first and set your own pace, which is brilliant. There are four tunnels where you do need to take care, use a torch and mind your head. Richard supplied a torch for me and was really great with making sure that I kept my head down when needed - and didn't tread in any puddles! At the end of the hike you arrive at the caldeirão verde waterfall itself and then follow the same trail back. A really enjoyable hike with a great guide.
I loved walking along the refreshing shadows of the levada, and being surprised by the lush landscapes. The guide's explanation Richard was great.
