After 3 days in Amsterdam, my soul needed the calm and beauty that was experienced on this canoe trip. Easy, peaceful canoeing. Lots of history of the area was provided and you did not walk away hungry after our delicious picnic. Highly recommended! If I ever travel to this area again, this soul saving adventure will be at the top of my list.
Thank you Mitchell, pleased to read your reaction. Let we say: " till an other time" Majel
This truly is a must-do! Majel is the sweetest woman and the best tour guide. I learned more from her than we did from any other tour we did. There were 3 of us in one canoe and had trouble keeping up! She’s a beast! The weather was perfect when we went, the scenery was beautiful, the food was amazing, and again—Majel was awesome!
It was great to have you at the Sunset Tour. And the bird that you have seen is the little Bittern or as we call it Little wood monkey. Sound as a safari that you made:) Greatings Majel
We cycled to the safari from Zunderdorp where we were staying and were welcomed by Majel and her cats! We were very fortunate that no one else had booked the tour with us so it became a private tour. We were given refreshments and an interesting talk about the geographical history of the area, and we were away in the canoe! It did take time for us to get used to it as we’ve only kayaked before and this is very different, but because Majel knew and chatted to everyone as we went through the village, it gave us time to get used to how to paddle. We had frequent stops to discuss the wildlife and make up of the area as well as a big (well earned) break for delicious local food. Some of the canoeing into the wind was VERY hard and we couldn’t tell if we were even moving, but once we’d made it through it was very rewarding. It felt very safe and you probably need medium fitness if the wind is fighting you. When we were cycling back (into the wind again) we stopped to say hello to a dog and chatted with its owner. The young man asked if we were holidaying in the area and we told him where we’d been and he said “oh Majel?! She is a legend!”
We almost didn't book this because of scheduling, but I am so glad we did. This was a fantastic time. You meet Majel at a Central station, take a small bus ride, and you're into the wetlands/countryside outside of the city. You walk through a beautiful small town and Majel invites you in like you're friends - into her home for a quick overview of what you're doing to do, some history, and a drink. While there, you get to meet some of her ducks, her cat, and some of the other animals in the village. Then you get on the canoes and you're on your way. I grew up near Seattle, so I love canoeing and kayaking and this was one of the most beautiful (and easy) spots to canoe through. You get to enjoy the nature, the animals, and the beautiful sunset as you are led, learning about the history of the wetlands and the importance of them to the Netherlands. It really was a great experience. Only downside is that I had one of the most severe allergic reactions to some of the pollen/vegetation in the area and I was dying for half of it (don't forget your allergy meds, folks!). My wife had a great time though, ha. Majel was a delight and, in addition to a fantastic spread of goodies, she brought bug spray and ponchos in case the weather got inclement.
The canoe tour was a highlight of our Amsterdam holiday. Far away from the city hustle and bustle we could enjoy the evening in the beautiful nature on the water. The canoeing was a lot of fun and the picnic was very delicious. Just in time for sunset we have reached the starting point of the circular tour again. We took great pictures in the golden hour.
Dank jullie wel voor deze mooi reactie Majel
Amazing views, the food was delicious & we even petted a cow along the way :) The guide is very friendly and keen to tell us about dutch history & culture. I have lived in the NL for 4 years now and would definitely recommend this - both for tourists or residents. There were even a couple of dutchies in the group and everyone really liked the tour!
The canoe trip was a highlight of our trip to the Netherlands! It was wonderful to see the beautiful countryside. Our guide was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot. The picnic was delicious with a bounty of delicious local products. We highly recommend this tour to other travelers.
This was easily one of the better "tour"s I've taken in decades of travel; the quotations intentional, as this was more like visiting a friend than a tour. You leave the hustle & bustle of Central Amsterdam behind, and a 6min metro ride & 8min bus ride later, you're in another world. Majel invites you to her home in a town of ~400 people, for a drink and a brief history/geography lesson, then off in canoes in the wetlands. Quiet, serene, beautiful - nothing but you & the birds. A country style picnic (cheeses, wine, fruit, bread) and some 2hrs+ of canoeing, then back on the bus. This was simply fabulous, and cannot recommend it highly enough, for anyone; slight caveat that there is some legitimate exercise involved, so is not a passive activity.
The experience was amazing!! Amazing host and love every second of it!!! I ended up being the only one on the sunset tour and it felt like a private tour where we chatted about the history of the wetlands and its something I'll remember forever 😊
This was an amazing experience; our favorite night while in Amsterdam. Majel was very welcoming and knowledgeable of her village and the surrounding waterways. The picnic was delicious, fresh, local and healthy. Absolutely recommend this trip.
