O Maine Medical Center é o lar da Barbara Bush Children’s Wing. Sra. Bush, a esposa do nosso 41o presidente e a mãe do 43o presidente, ela viveu grande parte de sua vida em Kennebunkport, Maine, 30 milhas a sul de Portland. Ela faleceu em 2018. A Sra. Bush fez um grande trabalho reunindo dinheiro para o tratamento de crianças com doenças terríveis, e seu legado é lembrado na ala infantil do Centro Médico do Maine. Esta é a Mansão Vitória. Construído por Ruggles Morse em 1858. “o melhor exemplo de arte, arquitetura e decoração vitoriana.” Ele a chamou de “Victoria Mansion” em homenagem à rainha Victoria da Grã-Bretanha, foi construída como sua casa de verão.
Do lado esquerdo, veja as coloridas casas geminadas de tijolos. Estas foram construídas originalmente para a classe dos criados, estas casas geminadas agora são muito bonitas… condomínios caros. Depois de todos aqueles incêndios, a partir daí passou-se a usar tijolo em toda a cidade, não muita madeira.
Portland's Harbor (o corpo de água que você acabou de navegar em) é um porto de "água profunda", geralmente não congela durante os invernos. O Golfo do Maine tem marés muito fortes, e essas marés misturam a coluna de água e trazem água mais profunda e mais quente para a superfície ao longo da costa.
Do lado direito do treinador passaremos pela casa de Neal Dow. Ex-prefeito de Portland, Neal Dow é conhecido como o pai da Lei Seca americana. Em 1851, o então prefeito Dow impôs uma proibição em todo o estado – proibindo a venda e o consumo de bebidas intoxicantes – que se tornou o modelo para a Proibição Nacional.
Este é o “Distrito de Artes de Portland”. A área tem muitas galerias de arte independentes, estúdios de trabalho, cafés e restaurantes. Mais à frente, à direita, está o Portland Art Museum.
Logo após o prédio indefinido à direita – a sede cinza/marrom da Sociedade Histórica do Maine – fica a Wadsworth Longfellow House. É o prédio de tijolos um pouco afastado da estrada, à esquerda. Esta é a casa onde o poeta cresceu. Construída após a Guerra Revolucionária por Peleg Wadsworth, um General da Guerra Revolucionária e avô de Henry Longfellow, é a casa de tijolos mais antiga de Portland.
Do nosso lado esquerdo está a 1ª Paróquia Unitária Universalista. Esta é a igreja mais antiga de Portland. O edifício é o segundo edifício que abrigou esta congregação.
À esquerda está a Prefeitura de Portland, um belo edifício para uma cidade pequena. Este é o terceiro edifício da Câmara Municipal neste local. Os dois primeiros prédios foram destruídos pelo fogo
O prédio alto de tijolos e concreto à sua esquerda é a Torre Franklin, construída na década de 1970. É o edifício mais alto do estado do Maine, com 16 andares.
Aqui está o Cemitério Oriental de Portland, é o cemitério mais antigo da cidade de Portland Algumas Pedras da Cabeça datam de 1768. Os marcadores mais antigos eram de madeira e foram perdidos nos incêndios.
Vamos voltar para os anos 1800, naquela época, os navios que entravam no porto de Portland não podiam ser vistos das docas até contornarem o ponto de terra em Spring Point Ledge e estavam quase no porto.
Observe que existem vários exemplos do “flattop triple-decker” deste estilo de habitação de cortiço, que é muito típico aqui na Nova Inglaterra, foram construídos nas décadas de 1880 a 1920.
À direita está o Porto de Portland. Parte de Casco Bay, uma enseada na costa sul do Golfo do Maine, a cidade de Portland fica ao longo de sua borda sul e o porto de Portland fica dentro.
Se você olhar por cima do ombro direito, veja a massa de terra com os tanques de óleo. Essa é a cidade de South Portland.
O Eastern Promenade é um ótimo espaço onde os moradores de Portland saem e aproveitam o clima agradável e a brisa do mar, ao pé do Eastern Prom é uma pequena praia chamada East End Beach.
Depois que os britânicos destruíram a cidade em 1775, os líderes da cidade de Portland decidiram que precisavam construir um forte. O espaço verde à direita é o resultado dessa decisão.
Você se lembrará anteriormente que falamos sobre as ruas em Old Portland, como elas foram nomeadas devido à sua proximidade com a água. Eles são Fore St, Middle St e Back St.

We appreciated the tour points of interest and historical value. The technical difficulties, despite doing what was suggested ahead of time and downloading everything prior to, is the reason for the rating. The app repeatedly closed and had a delay resulting in missed turns and directional mishaps. Thankfully, my husband is very direction-savvy and got us right back on track but it happened multiple times.

Overall good tour, we discovered areas of Portland that we otherwise wouldn’t have found. Minor technical glitches, and would have been nice to have more narration/information during the drive but overall very enjoyable and easy.

Although the app was quite informative, it kept cutting off before it finished explanation of some of the stops

It is easy to use and follow directions. Saves lots of time and covers everything for an overall tour. Can be used multiple times within a year.

It was an unexpected “feels like” 16 degrees (nation wide cold burst !) in early November. when we started our trip and even had a short bought of snow flurries, so this was the greatest alternative to a walking tour. Very enjoyable, at your own pace, Audio and GPS very informative, efficient and easy trouble shooting - but really didn’t have any problems! Great Day together for our short get away together!!! We both really enjoyed it !

It was fun to be able to drive around and be given the local information. The only problem was there was a road closure and it did not reroute us so we missed some things.
