Really enjoyed the tour of Harlem with Miss Doris. As a long term resident, her knowledge and passion for the history of area shone through. The two jazz clubs - American Union and Shrine - were excellent. Some amazing musicians.
What a joy to read this — thank you so much! Miss Doris is a true gem, and her love for Harlem runs deep. There's something extra special about experiencing this neighborhood through the eyes of someone who has lived and breathed its history, and we're so glad that came through for you. The American Union and Shrine are two of our favorite stops for exactly that reason — world-class musicians in rooms that feel like Harlem's soul. We hope to see you out on the streets of Harlem again soon!
Worst tour ever ,took us to a house Basment and called it “club “ and we had to pay 10$ on top ,so 60$ entry for a house Basment , for that money we could get a vip seats at the blue note jazz club down town not someone house Basment , total waste of money avoid this tourist trap
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear the experience didn't meet your expectations, though we'd like to clarify a few important points. Our records show that you arrived 40 minutes late to the tour and joined the group directly at the American Legion Post 398 — so you may have missed some important context about the venues along the way. The space you're referring to as a "house basement" is actually the American Legion Post 398, located in a historic brownstone on 132nd Street in the heart of Harlem. It sits a few steps below street level — a ground-floor entry that is characteristic of classic Harlem architecture, not a basement. This legendary venue is named in honor of Brigadier General Charles Young (1864–1922), the third African American to graduate from West Point and the first Black officer to achieve the rank of colonel. He was also the first Black national park superintendent and a celebrated Buffalo Soldier. The Post is one of the most authentic places in New York City to experience jazz the way it was heard in Harlem during the 1930s, '40s, and '50s — and we are proud to include it on our tour. Regarding the additional cost, that is an entry fee collected by the venue itself — not by our tour — and it goes toward supporting this important piece of Harlem history. As for the Blue Note, seating is first come, first served, and given that you were already 40 minutes behind schedule, securing a table there may have been a challenge for you.
Our guide was friendly and so knowledgeable and passionate about Harlem and its history. The jazz club at the end of the tour was definitely the highlight. We heard some amazing talents and had a great time chatting with the other people in the group. Double check the starting point of the tour , we almost missed it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience on the Evening Harlem Jazz Tour! We're thrilled your guide's passion for Harlem and its history came through — there's so much story in every block up here, and it's a joy to share it with guests who bring that kind of curiosity. The jazz club at the end is a favorite moment for us too. Live Harlem jazz, incredible talent, and new friends made over a shared love of the music — that's the magic we hope everyone takes home with them. Thank you also for the honest feedback about the starting point. That's important, and we take it seriously — we'll review our pre-tour instructions to make sure the meeting location is crystal clear for future guests. We're sorry for the stress of almost missing the start, and truly grateful you made it in time to enjoy the evening. We'd love to welcome you back for another tour whenever you're in Harlem again — there's always more music, history, and neighborhood to discover. Warmly, Carolyn
Great walking tour. Doris took care of us including one jazz bar.
We had Miss Doris as our tour guide of Harlem and the jazz scene. It was a night tour, very cold, and Miss Doris was amazing. She knows so much, is a life-long resident of Harlem so she has history and current knowledge and enthusiasm to spare in her love for her neighborhood and the scene. Highly recommend. Even if it is January and below freezing!!
Thank you so much for this wonderful review of the Evening Jammin Jazz Tour! We're thrilled that you had such a memorable experience exploring Harlem's rich jazz heritage with us. We have to give special recognition to Miss Doris – she truly is the heart and soul of this tour. Her deep knowledge of Harlem's history, combined with her genuine passion for the neighborhood and the jazz scene, creates something really special. As a lifelong resident, she brings an authenticity and enthusiasm that simply can't be replicated. Your kind words about her will mean the world to her and our entire team. We also want to celebrate your adventurous spirit! Braving the freezing January temperatures shows real dedication to experiencing Harlem's vibrant culture. That kind of commitment is exactly what makes our community so special – visitors who are willing to go the extra mile (even in below-freezing weather!) to truly connect with the place and its stories. We'd love to welcome you back soon, perhaps when the weather is a bit warmer – though we have a feeling Miss Doris could make any season unforgettable!
Very interesting & enjoyable tour. Our guide, Doris, was very friendly, & gave us good history and information of the area. We then went onto an enjoyable jazz performance. Doris then made sure we had very clear directions to get back to the Subway.
Thank you so much for this wonderful review! We're thrilled that you had such an enjoyable evening with us. Doris is truly the heart of our Evening Jazz Tour—her warmth, deep knowledge of Harlem's history, and genuine care for every guest make all the difference. We especially love that you noticed her attention to detail, from sharing rich stories about our neighborhood to making sure you had crystal-clear directions back to the subway. That's Doris in a nutshell: she goes above and beyond so every moment of your experience is seamless and memorable. Combined with the incredible jazz performance, we hope it created an unforgettable Harlem evening. We'd love to welcome you back soon! With gratitude, Welcome to Harlem
Doris was a phenomenal tour guide - very informative and delightful. She had amazing stories and answered all of our questions with personal anecdotes and historical panache. Listening to the magnificent live jazz music at the church and at Silvana was a perfect way to end the night - and the Middle Eastern food at Silvana was to die for! Our whole group agreed that this tour of Harlem was a highlight of our trip to New York. We highly recommend it!
Thank you so much for this glowing review! We're absolutely thrilled that Doris made such an impact on your group. She truly is phenomenal—her stories, historical knowledge, and personal anecdotes bring Harlem to life in a way that transforms a tour into an unforgettable journey. What makes us most proud is that you experienced the complete magic: the magnificent jazz performances at both the church and Silvana, the incredible food, and most importantly, that your whole group felt the spark together. Knowing this Evening Jazz Tour became a highlight of your New York trip means everything to us. Thank you for recommending us! We'd love to welcome you back soon. With joy and gratitude, Welcome to Harlem
Doris was very knowledgeable and friendly. She covered many aspects of Harlem’s origins, history, personalities, and architecture.
Thank you for sharing your experience on our Evening Harlem Jazz Tour! Doris really does cover it all — origins, history, the larger-than-life personalities who shaped this neighborhood, and the architecture that still tells Harlem's story on every block. She brings such depth to every tour, and it's wonderful to hear that came through for you. We'll be sure to pass your kind words along to her. Thank you for taking the time to review us — we'd love to welcome you back anytime for more music, more history, and more Harlem. Thank you, Carolyn
Doris was enthusiastic and well informed in her commentary of the history and the changes in Harlem. She grew up in Harlem and is a lifelong historian of the area. She pointed out buildings of note, where famous politicians and artists lived, and where events occurred. It was a Sunday, so I was surprised anything was going on, but Doris took us to 2 hidden places that had jazz, cocktails and food available. Harlem has changed so much, I would never have known the history without a guide such as Doris. I felt completely cared for and safe on our walk with her.
Thank you for this thoughtful and generous review. You captured Doris perfectly — she grew up in Harlem and has spent a lifetime learning, living, and loving this neighborhood. When she talks about the politicians, the artists, the buildings, and the events, she isn't reciting facts — she's sharing the place she comes from. That's the difference, and we're so glad you felt it. Sunday nights in Harlem can catch people off guard, but Doris knows exactly where the music lives after hours. Those hidden jazz spots are part of the magic of this neighborhood — you just have to know the doors to knock on. Your feeling that you wouldn't have found this Harlem without her is the whole reason we do what we do. And your words about feeling "completely cared for and safe" — that means everything to us. That's Doris. She treats every guest like family, and it's wonderful to hear that came through so clearly. We'll be sure to pass your kind words along to her. Thank you for taking the time to share such a heartfelt review. We hope you'll come back to Harlem soon — there's always more music, more history, and more hidden corners waiting to be discovered. Carolyn
It is a small group walking tour of Harlem. The meeting point is right in front of the Apollo which is now under construction. So a bit confusing. The history of Harlem while walking through the area enriched the experience. We made it to two of the jazz spots they were both great. The guide is from the area and we felt very safe and comfortable . We will be back and I would do this tour again.
