O Cemitério e Memorial Americano da Normandia é um cemitério e memorial da Segunda Guerra Mundial que homenageia as tropas americanas que morreram na Europa durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Um memorial no cemitério inclui mapas e detalhes dos desembarques na Normandia e das operações militares que se seguiram. No centro do memorial está o Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves, uma estátua de bronze. O cemitério também inclui dois mastros de bandeira onde, em horários diferentes, as pessoas se reúnem para assistir as bandeiras americanas sendo baixadas e dobradas. O cemitério, inaugurado em 1956, é o cemitério mais visitado entre os mantidos pela American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), com um milhão de visitantes por ano. It is an extraordinary place, out of the ordinary. Three pieces of advice: 1/ Plan for almost the whole day if you want to do a complete visit (you can eat on-site for a small cost or go out and come back, it's your choice) - 2/ Wear proper shoes because the Memorial is very large (both inside and outside), plus, like in any establishment of a somewhat "museum" type, you will do a lot of walking - 3/ Take the audioguide, which is very well done in terms of both commentary and the tour route. Neither my husband nor I are particularly history enthusiasts, yet we absolutely loved this visit and learned a great deal, in a very simple way, about this period of our history. If you are in the area, do not hesitate; it is a must-visit that each of us should experience to realize that a war is not a video game, nor a role-playing game, nor a movie where actors get up and go home. It is about humans (men, women, children, civilians or military) who have lived through horrors that currently exist in countries not so far from us.
My husband and I spent the morning at the WWII Memorial Museum and the afternoon visiting the DDay landing sites - Point du Hoc, Omaha Beach and the American Cemetary. You need a good three or four hours at the Museum as there is a lot to see and read. There is also a great short film to see in the cinema area which goes for about ten to fifteen minutes. We had lunch in the Museum's cafe and the food was of good quality. The afternoon tour of the DDay landing sites was great and our guide, Maureen, was so knowledgeable and so friendly. She even allowed us some time to get our feet wet in the ocean at Omaha Beach to cool off during a heat wave. For anyone interested in WWII history and the DDay landing sites, the Museum and the 5 hour afternoon tour was well worth the money. Thanks Maureen. Greg & Cheryl - Australia.
Cooler temps and possible rain! We had 6 in our group and those in the back of the van could not hear. Our guide was nice, but hard to understand and she had difficulty with understanding us!
Excellent visit, it must be seen. The visit will last for over three and a half hours, at least. But you cannot go to Normandy and not see it.
Our guide was very informative and answered all of our questions. She kept us on track.

Excellent and in depth tour of key sites point du hoc and Omaha beach. Plus we got to the cemetery on time for taps and the flag lowering which was awesome to witness.
We've been to several War Museums in Europe. This is a very good one. The exhibits are presented in a variety of formats - you can breeze through just looking, or you can read every word of the narratives that accompany the exhibits. Both ways will be rewarding. There are a few short movies in a couple of places. It is worthwhile to view these. There are several parts to the museum so a person can do all or just a few of them. We were there in the morning when there were fewer people. During the school year, you run into bunches of students and it's hard to see some exhibits. There is a very nice bistro where one can get a nice sandwich and other light foods / drink. There is an extremely nice gift shop. We stayed about 4 hours and could have easily spent another half day at least. There is an admission fee, but this museum is a good value.
We purchased tickets online ahead of our visit and it worked out fine and saved us time getting into the museum . We also purchased the audio tour with our tickets which downloaded to our smart phones. Operation of the audi-tour was a little clunky- but we got the hang of it after a while. Be sure to bring earbuds if doing the downloadable tour. There is a big free parking lot at the museum. There are also small lockers at this museum which are free and big enough for a small backpack or a few jackets. The museum has a lot of info on WW2 that is very well presented. If you enjoy reading detail and listening to interesting films then plan for a long day. We spent 5 hours here and feel like we ran out of time and had to skim through some sections like the Cold War ear - which was also informative. There is a very good but somber section dedicated to the holocaust which is very well done. It’s a sad exhibit but very important to remember this horrible period of human history to insure it never happens again.
