Fun Ride!

There’s no better way to experience Portland and Weymouth. Neil was a personable host who led us to historical areas and incredible views. The bikes were great and the pace was a nice mix of adventuring and breaks for lunch and picture opportunities. I’d highly recommend this tour to get a complete understanding of this beautiful port city!

Ask more questions for this tour!

I want to say that I have never written a damaging review because I do not want to hurt anyone's business but I felt obligated to write something for possible future guests of this tour! Booked this cycling tour of Weymouth coming from a cruise ship. I asked the tour operator if this trip was a good fit for two 73 year old experienced bike riders. I also asked about the elevation changes and road traffic. He assured that this ride was fairly easy and had only 1 steep elevation area and we would not be on roads with light traffic! First on the elevation change although there was one very steep grade change, that was rather difficult to navigate, there were also a few more steep elevation changes along with a few steep downhill areas to navigate. Now about the road riding and traffic. There were 6 riders and our tour leader cycling. The tour operator was almost always in front of us. Although I can't say the exact distance in front I will say it was far enough that anything he said only the first rider would have a chance to hear. The roads were quite busy with cars coming in both directions! Quite a few times we only had a narrow lane to ride along! We had at least 3 spots where we had to be very careful as the turn was much more than 90 degrees and we could not see oncoming traffic until they were quite close! At one of these hairpin turns I was the fifth rider and there was one younger gentlemen riding right behind me. I came out of the turn and was within 4 feet of getting hit by a car! The rider behind me said this is quite a ride and I said and I answered yes and a bit dangerous. Thank goodness I have good balance on a bike and was able to steer clear of that oncoming car! The tour leader had no idea how close I had come to being hit by that car because he was too far ahead and also navigating this hairpin turn on the road. I want to write about the tour itself and give a couple suggestions that could help this tour. We have been on cycling trips in the states and also Italy and the tour guide always rides along with the group, moving from front to back so as to keep tabs on the riders and also telling about the sights along the way. The only information we could hear was when we actually stopped at a sight along the way, which was about 3 times during our 4.5 hour tour. Weymouth is a beautiful town with lots of cool spots to see! I know it is not feasible to have ear pieces for the riders and guide but it would have been better if our guide tried to move from the front to the back of the group giving everyone a chance to hear about Weymouth. I would have preferred to stop at a few more spots to hear about Weymouth and it's history! The tour was advertised as 5 hours and it seemed as though the tour operator was in a hurry to finish it earlier than that! He also think more about older riders and the e bike equipment! You should not expect a 73 year old female to ride a bike that you have to cast your leg over to mount the seat. He should have realized that she would need a step through bike which is what has been provided to every female on any cycling tour we have previously been on! I had to say to him that he needed to get her a different bike for her safety! He did that and about half way through the ride that e bike computer somehow turned off and my wife was struggling to ride the bike without e assist. I was right behind her and could see that she was working so hard just to pedal and could not keep up! A younger, stronger, female rider saw her struggling and tried to switch with her but had trouble also. Finally after about 10 minutes of the 3 of us not keeping up the guide finally realized that there was a problem and rode back to us. He had to reset the computer on that bike. My wife then got back riding on it without any issues for the rest of the trip. In conclusion I hope that the tour operator will take this as constructive criticism because it is not meant to be a nasty review.

I'm sorry to hear you did not enjoy the E-bike tour. I welcomed the title of your review as I encourage customers ask questions to ensure the tour is both suitable and enjoyable. In your case I asked if you had biking/e-biking experience and was pleased to hear you both owned E-bikes. The question you asked was 'wondering if this ride is easy or strenuous'. My reply included the distance we cover and reiterated the one particular climb. I feel it is important to respond to some of your other comments. I have both electric mountain bikes and electric step through bikes. I do not make an assumption of what bike is suitable based on gender or age (I did not know your ages). When you arrived I explained I had other bikes available and we made the swap. Being a British Cycling qualified mountain bike guide my role is to safely guide the group during all times of the tour and that means leading the group NOT casually riding alongside the other riders chatting about the places we are riding through. I am always very aware of where all the other riders are and do not automatically come back to check what is going on when riders stop. I will wait a few minutes as it may be someone has stopped to take a photo, check their phone or take a sip of water. In your case the control unit had been switched off and needed turning on again. When we stop (and sorry we stopped more than 3 times) you did learn about the area. the history and we all engaged in conversation. At no point did i rush this tour or any other. I am very mindful of the group especially if coming of cruises as I want to ensure you get back in plenty of time to enjoy Weymouth town before you catch the bus back to the cruise terminal. Once again I am truly sorry you didn't enjoy the tour as all my other customers have. I accept constructive criticism and if needed will make amendments however in this case there is no need to make changes based on your experience. Unfortunately as you were probably aware when writing this review it is damaging to a business especially if parts of the review are untrue or exaggerated. I would hope that potential customers reading your review would also read all the other positive reviews (along with the 95 5* Google reviews) and contact me to discuss the tour in detail.

A Grand Day Out

Neil was an excellent guide and very gracious in swapping dates last minute, which was inconvenient for his diary it transpired although he demonstrated no hint of it to us. We were allowed to take our time on the stop sections of the tour and discovered parts of Weymouth & Portland we’d not seen before, despite having previously lived in the area a few years back. Thanks once again, Neil…🙏🏻

Wonderful excursion!!

We had an absolutely wonderful e-bike excursion in Weymouth with our tour guide, Neil! From start to finish, the experience was seamless and fun. The e-bikes were easy to use, well maintained, and made cycling a pleasure—even the hills were effortless. Never having used an e-bike before, we were shocked at the level of assist provided. The route showcased the very best of the Weymouth/Portland area, with stunning coastal views, and plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos. Our guide, Neil, was friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the area, sharing interesting history and local insights that made the ride even more engaging. This excursion struck the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. Neil made the day accessible for all fitness levels and was quite patient and accommodating with all riders. If you’re looking for a fun, engaging way to explore Weymouth, and see places you might otherwise miss, this e-bike tour is an absolute must. We would do it again in a heartbeat!

Great tour, highly recommended

We were on a cruise in Portland and were looking for an alternative to the tour offered by the ship. Everything worked great and we had several contacts with the provider in advance, regarding bike request and setting of the e-bike. These were impeccable and we had a great guide with Neil who gave us great insights around Portland away from the normal “highlights”. We would book the tour again immediately.

Bike tour of Portland Isle

A fantastic trip designed for us, my 2 friends and I. We vary in age 33, 43 and 70 so tour is great for any age but should be in reasonable health and some bike experience helps. Owner was the person guiding us and he was very easy to work with. We were staying in Weymouth. Since just 3 of us he came to us. We toured all of Isle of Portland. We started in Weymouth than had a stop on Isle for a sandwich coffee and tea. It was great. The bikes were very well maintained and easy to handle. The electric bikes had 4 settings and worked great going up hills. Trip tool 5 hours and we all loved it! Highly recommend. They recently returned to Viator but you can book directly Dorset E-Bike Tours.
