Lovely guides on both boats and the bus, gorgeous views at every step of the journey. It was raining the day I went so there were many temporary waterfalls along the sound, just beautiful!
Absolutely stunning, and great service from the very first moments on arrival! We were greeted, had a little cafe, a beautiful cruise down the lake with commentary, a lovely coach ride with scenic stops in the way to the sound, and cruising through Doubtful Sound was breathtaking. We had commentary on the history and sites throughout. I highly recommend this full day excursion!
Absolutely fantastic experience all around! I was a bit worried we wouldn’t see much in the torrential downpour the morning started with, but the waterfalls were stunning and it was very comfortable. All the staff were lovely, our bus driver was hilarious, and I was so fulfilled by the day I fell asleep on the way home! Highly recommend this experience, it’s been on my bucket list to see the Fiordlands and I’m so glad I ended up on this trip rather than Milford Sound, it was so beautiful and remote and peaceful!
Lovely tour, but there’s room for improvement, especially considering the high price. I was particularly impressed by our two bus drivers. Their stories about life in and around Doubtful Sound were passionate, engaging, and clearly adapted to the moment. In contrast, the captain’s commentary during the cruise felt monotonous and was difficult to follow, despite the interesting content. I also found the boat less suitable for this type of excursion and group size. The outdoor decks were small, with very limited seating, which meant constantly competing for a spot and made it difficult to take good photos. While there was plenty of space inside, viewing such a beautiful environment through glass — even in heavy rain — took away from the experience. The equipment placed on the foredeck also obstructed views and photo opportunities.
An experience never to be forgotten, from the time we decided to the support received from the RealNZ team, it was amazing, we were 3 adults and going on the overnight Cruise required us to take 02 cabins on the Navigator, after many discussions we got an option to go on the Wanderer, which had 02 cabins where 4 people can be accomodated in one cabin, only difference between the 02 Cruises is Navigator is self contained and Wanderer has common showers & bathrooms. There is no difference as far as service is concerned since we had the chance to explore both. About Doubtful Sound one has to see to beleive the beauty of this place, it is 10 times bigger than the Milford sound, and you are only to your self as there is no other operators nor any tour company's having a similar tour. The start to end of the tour was on time, and there was not a single things that went wrong, right from boarding the catamaran at manapouri lake, to the bus ride on woolmer's pass, and on the overnight cruise. Fantastic people managing the show and helping us get an out of the world experience.
Whether on Lake Manapouri by boat or by bus through the rainforest to the Doubtful Sound dock: each trip offered something special in terms of natural experiences and excellent guides. We were lucky - we saw great weather, blue penguins, dolphins in the water, and seals on two large rocks. The excursion was very well organized.
We had a fantastic day exploring Doubtful Sounds. The company are extremely well organised with super friendly staff. We started the morning with a boat ride across Manapouri Lake the Captain was very informative and it was a great start to the tour. Then onto a bus with Johnny as our driver who was very knowledgeable and funny, we enjoyed his commentary very much! We were able to get off the bus in a couple of sections which was a great chance to take some really nice photos. The boat ride into Doubtful Sounds was amazing, we loved our day especially when the engines were cut and you got to fully appreciate the silence. It will stay with me always as one of the most memorable days of our New Zealand trip.
This was an ok tour that lacked the wow, amazing, stunning moments. It didn’t help that at times on the Fiord it was totally clouded in. Lake Manapouri was clear and sunny as was much of the drive through Wilmott Pass. Many had told us Doubtful was better than Milford so we paid the $600 plus for the 2 of us to do it. Quite frankly the drive into Milford was more spectacular as was the Sound. Our money could’ve been better spent. Not even free tea & coffee! Overall, a disappointing day. Positives - crew commentary and engagement was good.
5/5 is not enough of a star rating. Exceptional tour guides full of knowledge of the area, the people & the animals. We also ordered the lunch which included morning tea & afternoon tea. So worth the cost.
The entire day was excellent. Each RealNZ staff member we encountered was friendly and informative. We enjoyed the ferry across Lake Manapouri, the bus ride over Wilmot Pass, and the three hour cruise on Doubtful Sound. Our seats in the ferry cabins & on the buses were comfortable. The cruise itself also had lots of comfortable seating, and easy access to outdoor decks for viewing. The entire experience was top notch.
