A antiga Aya Sofya, muitas vezes chamada de Hagia Sophia em inglês e um dos monumentos mais emblemáticos e duradouros de Istambul com quase 15 séculos, foi convertida de museu em mesquita com um decreto recente do presidente da Turquia, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. O edifício está classificado como museu desde 1934 após uma declaração de Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, o primeiro presidente turco e fundador da República da Turquia. A estrutura, considerada uma joia da arquitetura bizantina, foi originalmente construída como uma catedral em 537 EC pelo imperador romano Justiniano I. Aya Sofya também teve um período de quase cinco séculos como mesquita quando os otomanos conquistaram Istambul, então chamada Constantinopla, em 1453 e converteu o edifício num espaço religioso para os muçulmanos.
O edifício mais fotogênico de Istambul foi o grande projeto do sultão Ahmet I (r 1603-17), cujo túmulo está localizado no lado norte do local, de frente para o Parque Sultanahmet. O exterior maravilhosamente curvilíneo da mesquita apresenta uma cascata de cúpulas e seis minaretes delgados. Azulejos azuis İznik adornam o interior e dão ao edifício seu nome não oficial, mas comumente usado.
Os imperadores bizantinos adoravam uma tarde nas corridas de bigas, e essa arena retangular ao lado do Parque Sultanahmet era o local de sua escolha. No seu apogeu, foi decorado por obeliscos e estátuas, algumas das quais permanecem até hoje. Re-paisagizado nos anos mais recentes, é um dos pontos de encontro e passeios mais populares da cidade.
Topkapı é o tema de histórias mais coloridas do que a maioria dos museus do mundo juntos. Sultões libidinosos, cortesãos ambiciosos, belas concubinas e eunucos ardilosos viveram e trabalharam aqui entre os séculos XV e XIX, quando era a corte do império otomano. Uma visita aos opulentos pavilhões do palácio, ao Tesouro repleto de joias e ao extenso Harém dá uma visão fascinante de suas vidas.
O colorido e caótico Grande Bazar é o coração da Cidade Velha de Istambul e tem sido assim há séculos. Começando como um pequeno bedesten (armazém) abobadado construído por ordem de Mehmet, o Conquistador, em 1461, cresceu para cobrir uma vasta área à medida que as ruas entre os bedesten, as lojas vizinhas e os hans (caravanserais) foram cobertas e o mercado assumiu a forma extensa e labiríntica que mantém até hoje.

Unfortunately, this tour did not live up to expectations, especially considering the high cost. I actually learned more about Turkish culture and history on a food tour I took than on this one. Our guide rushed us through each stop, often speed walking without giving us time to truly take in the sites or snap photos. Despite knowing I was pregnant, he made no effort to adjust the pace. I often found myself 20–40 feet behind the group of 3 of us, and he never once checked in or acknowledged it. Lunch was another disappointing moment. Not only did he choose an expensive restaurant, but he also allowed us to cover his meal without offering to pay us back—or even saying thank you. Overall, the experience felt impersonal and awkward. We did our best to remain positive: we made small talk, bought him a drink, and my husband even insisted on leaving a tip. But in the end, it felt like our presence and experience didn’t matter to the guide at all. This was especially disheartening because every other part of our visit to Istanbul has been truly wonderful. Sadly, this tour was the one real letdown.

Tour guide was late and creepy towards my female friend, made the time uncomfortable and the information provided went barely beyond placards near key areas. Would not book again or recommend would rather use the free audio tour materials provided at the pavilion.

The Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia were amazing! Our guide was 1 1/2 hour late on picking us up! I lost 2 hours of sleep!

Like most Viator tours I have done in foreign countries, the driver was late to pick up (30 minutes), but once we finally started, everything went smoothly. Beza is a friendly guide and informative. Full day tour, and I saw what I wanted to see.
