Disappointing from start to finish. Arriving at the university was chaotic with traffic backed all the way back. We were advised to leave the grab and walk the rest of the way. The path was not smooth and was hazardous. When we got to the festival location, it was very hot with no place to sit. We walked around for a couple of hours visiting the shops that were set up. When we were finally allowed to enter the dining area, the food was set up in individual stations with each one have a very long line, some in very muddy areas. The lanterns were difficult to launch with many catching fire. Fortunately there were workers running around with fire extinquishers. Leaving the festival was the biggest challenge. We had been instructed to take the same bus back which was impossible. There was no organization that allowed you to find the proper bus. Asking the workers was not helpful since they didn't have the information. Finally we were told to get on any bus or van so we chose one going to the night bazaar since that location was near our hotel. We sat in that van in the parking lot for 90 minutes until the van was actually able to leave. Somewhere along the way, the driver pulled over, got out of the van and urinated on the side of the road. it was ironic that the people in the van for, at this point over two hours, were not considered. When we arrived back in Chaing Mai, some riders asked to be dropped off at a different location. When the van stopped to allow them out of the van, we were all instructed to leave. The driver didn't seem to speak or understand English so we had not choice but to leave the van. We had no idea where we were or how to get back to our hotel. With the help of google maps we were able to fine our way with it being about a 15 minute walk. We did not reach our hotel until after midnight which was not what we expected when the event ended at 8:45.

Seeing thousands of lanterns float up into the night sky was such a magical experience that we will never forget. However, it's not a well organised event and would just like to share some tips for those considering going. 1) Recommend booking your own transport to and from the festival. We read many reviews about how frustrating it was getting to the event, having to get there super early and queue up for the shuttle buses. We wanted to avoid this so opted to book a Bolt (taxi). From Chiang Mai Old Town it was a 45 min drive and costed about 850THB. It was a very smooth way to get to the event and allowed us to enjoy it from the start. On the way back, we saw plenty of buses ready to take passengers back to town so we decided to hop on one instead of taking a taxi. Big mistake. While we got on the bus very quickly, it toom almost 2hrs just to get out onto the road. We got on the bus around 8.45pm but didn't get back to our accomodation until around 11.45pm. Note: A taxi from the festival back to Chiang Mai Old Town is about 2000 - 3000 THB. 2) Upon arriving at the festival, find the entrance gate for your ticket type and colour. Show them your e-ticket and they will provide your physical ticket on a lanyard. 3) Bring toilet paper. The toilets did have toilet paper at the beginning of the event but it ran out quickly. 4) There's only some stalls for purchasing snacks and drinks. We didn't see any stalls for buying proper food so don't expect to have much access to food until the buffet opens. 5) Buffet actually opens before 5pm. The event states it opens at 5.30pm but on the day we found it was already open at 5pm. Make sure you find the buffet area allocated for your ticket type. Once you enter, the entrance stall will provide you with a paper cup, cutlery and a map of the food stalls. The queues can get very long and take a long time to get food so my partner and I lined up at different stalls at the same time and just asked for two serves. Most stalls allow this and it just saves so much time so highly recommend this approach. 6) Find your seat in the main lantern area before 7.30pm as they announce that they close off the area at this time. 7) Be aware of your surroundings during the lantern release. A common mistake during the event is that people haven't waited enough time for the lantern to become buoyant before releasing it. When this happens the lantern floats sideways before descending near people's heads. This can cause people's hair to catch fire (there are videos of this happening). There are plenty of staff (including some carrying extinguishers) ready to put out any fires that may happen but please still be careful 🙏 That's all the tips we have for those who plan on attending. Hopefully they are helpful in preparing for the event!

Best experience in my life!!! It was amazing and very unforgettable. Food was ok, transport very convenient but the show was beautiful

The event itself and the grounds were phenomenal. It is far away from the city- almost an hour each way and traffic is intense making it longer. The VIP area had terrific food and lots of variety and the general grounds were well laid out too. The grounds were very muddy as it had been raining the days before though so don’t wear white shoes. The process of checking in at the university and getting into the transit each way was very disorganized though. Coming back it took the van an hour and a half just to get to the road for the hour trip because of the complete chaos. Plan to not be back to the city until easily 3 hours after the event is over probably later.

It was all amazing, I loved it. I liked it very much, when I needed help, you immediately helped me by WhatsApp msg. My family was very happy too.

They charge me 4 tickets and only can used 3, because 1 is kid In the festival They used my ticket for other person and when we want to join 1 ticket was missing Then They did not refund any

The festival was great. However, there was misinformation when purchasing the ticket. I purchased a VIP package that includes transportation and a gift bag. There was no gift bag at the event, that’s no big deal. We got transportation going to the event but at the end on the way back, there was no transportation for us and it rained so we were stranded for hours in the mud. It was really hard to get a taxi as so many people were also stranded and we were all looking for a signal to call a taxi. After a couple of hours we finally got a taxi that’s over priced because we’re in the middle of nowhere and we were desperate, tired, wet and full of mud and the taxi driver didn’t really want to come so he took advantage of the situation. This was no VIP experience.

On the way it was all excellent, many hours before the show was not so good, at the end of the night we had no one to ask where our transport to the city left. Thousands of people walking aimlessly, raining everything full of mud. We left the place at 21hs and got a bug at 01.00 am after fighting like animals to see who got into the bug, crazy That really tarnished a little bit how wonderful it was to live that moment of the lantern release.
