Touring with Kevin from One Life Japan was the absolute highlight of our trip. He provided a truly off-the-beaten-path experience with experiences and local connections we could never have found without him. While Tokyo and Kyoto were fun, they were crowded with tourists and didn’t require a guide; however, our time with Kevin exploring rural villages was far more memorable. One night we stayed at a small, traditional inn (Ryokan) with authentic, yet incredibly elaborate homemade meals, a must do. Other highlights were visiting the snow monkeys in a hot spring and learning to make traditional soba noodles with an adorable and sweet elderly woman who maintains handmade traditions. The experience was perfect for us and our 12-year-old. Kevin planned the trip based on our interest including a trip to a garbage/recycling transfer station as this is my wife's business interest. But a great example of how Kevin customized our trip...along with his fun suggestions for historic streets, towns and a place where local's still cook in the hot spring water! Kevin is incredibly knowledgeable about Japanese traditions, natural onsens, history, and local things. Having a dedicated driver, guide, and coordinator for these unique experiences truly made this a trip of a lifetime. We just wish we had more time.
Brilliant tour with wonderful, rustic activities in the Japanese countryside. My experience involved way more than just riding bikes. I met some wonderful people, participated in the production of some homemade mochi (which, if you’ve never eaten freshly made, it’s almost worth the experience on its own). We also made some handmade soba noodles, and of course, each day featured an extremely relaxing hour or so at a rural onsen — Japanese hot baths built on natural thermal hot springs). I had a rare experience of being the only one on the tour due to the fact that a family who was scheduled on the same tour as I had registered, ended up canceling, last-minute due to travel logistic problems, so Kevin ended up giving me a very individualized tour. The Ryan that we stayed at, we’re all wonderful, and the proprietors exceptionally warm and welcoming. It was definitely the runaway highlight of my visit to Japan. Can’t recommend it enough!
Really a unique experience that we would not have had on our own. We expected some nice bike rides and beautiful scenery, and it had that, but the level of interaction with the people was something we did not expect and was even better than the scenery. Kevin was so flexible and understanding. There were times we deviated from his plan because we probably stopped more than expected. He never rushed us past those places though, and made it very comfortable to explore, but somehow made sure we were still on time and it felt like that is how it was planned from the start. The meals were delicious and even the simple ones stood out because of the stories about their background, or about how they fit into the regular people's lives. He even explained all the small steps in growing rice from before planting until it reached our table. Based on seeing his relationship with the inn keepers and locals we visited, its clear that we are not the first people he has taken to them, but everyone made it feel like we were unique and not just another customer.
We joined the One Life Japan cycling and walking tour and it was honestly not like any other tour we’ve ever experienced. Everything felt personal and thoughtful — from the unique routes chosen to the little details that made each day special. The cycling and walking combination gave us the perfect balance: being active while still slowing down enough to truly soak in the scenery. We got see places that most tourists would completely miss, and the pace made it easy to appreciate both the big highlights and the quiet, hidden spots. Our guide was fantastic — knowledgeable, warm, and always making sure we were comfortable while sharing insights that brought the history and culture to life. Every stop felt intentional, not rushed, and it really felt like we were experiencing Japan on a deeper level. Staying in a mix of traditional Ryokons and local village farm houses gave us the opportunity to experience Japan in a way that other tour operators just can't achieve at an affordable budget. If you’re looking for something different, something beyond the usual “cookie cutter” tour, One Life Japan delivers. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that we’ll always remember.
