Awesome Adrenaline Adventure

Great experience saw humpbacks breeching, Mom Humpback and calf. Guide was very knowledgeable about the animals we encountered: Humpback’s, seals, eagles. Really safety conscious!

Simply overwhelming

On June 10, we went on a tour from Parksville with Captain Simon. We were hoping for some sightings, and our expectations were more than met! A few years ago, we had already seen some of the “residents” off Vancouver, and this time we were hoping to spot a humpback whale. We were incredibly lucky… we saw a total of three humpback whales, as well as an encounter between two orca families and even both species together. It was so moving to see these wonderful animals interacting. We saw the orcas leaping, slapping their fins, and even an orca calf. These unforgettable experiences were accompanied by lots of information from Simon, and we could tell how deeply connected he feels to the animals. If we ever come back to Vancouver Island, we’ll definitely take another tour with Ocean Ecoventures!

Seeing both humpback whales and orcas, especially witnessing interactions between these amazing species is a truly special experience. We’re so glad Simon’s knowledge and passion helped bring the encounter to life. Our captains love sharing the stories of the animals we are fortunate enough to observe, and we’ll be sure to pass along your kind words to him. No Go for Whale watching

Timely and comprehensive communication. Easy to reach by phone and quick to process my refund. But our original excursion date was cancelled due to weather and we were offered alternatives. This seemed great — they had a few options that still worked during our time on the Island for vacation. We already had plans for the Friday so chose the Saturday option. Was very excited — this was the only pre planned event made for our trip. Found out Friday afternoon that the Saturday option given was not confirmed as only my husband and I and one other person were booked on the boat. As a result barring 2 more people booking the excursion would be a no go. Although I understood this condition from the original booking and I knew weather could still cancel it — I don’t understand why they would reschedule to an unconfirmed boat due to the number of people??? Also had they made me aware of the situation when I was rebooking I could have moved my Friday plans to make the excursion happen. Very disappointed and will not pre book next time but plan something on the fly with a different event company.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We're glad to hear our team was easy to reach and that the refund process was handled quickly. We're very sorry your tour didn't work out. After your original departure was cancelled due to weather, we offered the Saturday option because it fit within your travel dates and, at the time, there was still a reasonable opportunity for that tour to confirm. During the summer we regularly receive last-minute bookings, so pending tours often do reach the required minimum. We completely understand your disappointment, especially knowing this was the highlight of your vacation. In hindsight, we could have been clearer that the alternative departure was still pending confirmation, and we appreciate you bringing that to our attention. Your feedback is valuable, and we'll use it to improve how we communicate tour status and alternative options with future guests. We hope you'll consider joining us again should your travels bring you back to Vancouver Island.

Great Trip All Round; some tips to know

We have lived on Vancouver Island but never taken a whale-watching boat tour. We choose Parksville because the Victoria's harbour had too many tour operators so crowded boats in the feeding grounds. Andy was our tour guy and he was not only knowledgeable, he answered questions and even gave us time when a 2nd sighting appeared. It is a one hour fast boat ride south to get to the feeding grounds. Once there, it was totally up to chance whether a sighting would happen. Weather, time of year, how many other boats in the area are all factors. We were lucky to see at least 4 humpback whales. If the goal is to take pictures, have a good zoom on your cellphone and hold steady. Take a hundred shots to get 5 good ones. Action is fast and whales move quickly They're on one side of the boat and then the other. The tour operators must keep 100m away by law although if a whale comes close to the boat while engine is cut, it's totally by chance. On our way back, we sighted "Chainsaw", an older orca known to the operators with distinctive markings on his dorsal fin. Because Andy gave us time to watch, he was in a rush to get us back to the dock by 4pm. It was a very fast and thrilling one hour ride back as we jumped waves. If you like roller coasters, you will love the feel of the freefall. Ordinarily, the ride back should be more sedate like the ride out but as it was, we were 15 mins late in returning. Tip: The website says to dress warmly. It is very cold out in the middle of the strait, but we are required by law to wear a full preserver suit. Whatever you're wearing inside is fine. Wear good shoes and keep hats securely tied. Also says you can take a snack. There was not much time to eat as the resting spot was used for spotting whales. Besides, some may actually feel nauseous from the movement of the boat. Tip: Parking is tricky. The first lot on Lee Rd is long-term for weekly parking. The second lot has parking for French Creek Pub/Cafe 365. The third lot is paid parking but you can only park in yellow lined spaces. White and blue are reserved. You must find a space before paying the $9.50. This parking is easy to pay for as you don't need a phone. It accepts credit card and is good for the full day. Go early. You're supposed to be there 40 mins before, I'd give it another 10 if you're not familiar or it's the weekend and the marina is busy. Tip: You will be warned to use the washroom before the tour. Good advice. They have a washroom on the boat, but there is no good time (or way) to get to it when you're out. Tip: Go afterwards and have dinner at French Creek Pub since you already have parking and order their fish and chips. Huge and delicious portions. Make a reservation as they're already full at 4:30pm. Tip: Wear sunscreen & lip balm. Four hours in the sun will leave your face sunburnt and salty.

Absolutely awesome... GO!

Absolutely awesome! The water was like glass...very calm! Brand new boat! Simon was an awesome guide! Would highly recommend if you are even considering whale watching. Saw a pod of killer whales hunting. Catching and eating their prey, a bunch of humpback, including a baby, harbor seals and tons of loons! Beautiful scenery!
