Uma visita à sinagoga Português é uma experiência deslumbrante. Tudo foi mantido como no século XVII. Em vez de luzes elétricas, a sinagoga é iluminada por centenas de velas.

O Museu Judaico é um belo museu de alto nível que ocupa quatro edifícios monumentais da sinagoga no meio do Bairro Cultural Judaico. Ele fornece uma imagem única da vida judaica holandesa passada e presente em todas as suas facetas. O museu possui uma extensa coleção de itens que vão de pinturas a filmes, de utensílios a apresentações em 3D. A qualquer momento há também duas exposições temporárias em exibição.
No coração do Bairro Cultural Judaico, fica a majestosa Sinagoga Portuguesa. O prédio ainda é usado para serviços religiosos, mas também é aberto ao público. Hospeda concertos freqüentes à luz de velas. Centenas de velas iluminam o interior perfeitamente intacto do século XVII. Os visitantes dos prédios menores do complexo encontrarão câmaras do tesouro contendo uma coleção única de objetos cerimoniais feitos de prata, ouro, brocado e seda. A biblioteca judaica em funcionamento mais antiga do mundo também está aqui: Ets Haim Livraria Montezinos, que está na Lista do Patrimônio Mundial da UNESCO.
O Museu Judaico júnior é um museu criado especialmente para os visitantes mais jovens dentro do Museu Judaico. Aqui as crianças podem conhecer algo sobre a vida judaica e a tradição judaica de uma forma divertida. O interior do museu está configurado como a casa de uma família judia. Todos os dias as crianças podem assar mini-hallahs (pãezinhos trançados) na cozinha kosher, aprender um pouco de hebraico no escritório ou tocar músicas juntas na sala de música.

If you are history buff you need to see this. Several WW II memorials in the area. It is sad that it is no longer used.

It is an incredible piece of history. The fact that it has survived is impressive. The Judaica that has survived is extraordinary.
What an amazing building. Opened in 1675 and very soon became a major tourist attraction in Amsterdam. Still no heating or electricity! It really is a 'must see' if visiting Amsterdam. Second oldest synagogue in Europe still in use.
Visiting the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam was a truly moving experience. It’s incredibly generous of the Sephardic community to open their Synagogue and facilities to visitors. The building itself is stunning and transports you back to 1675, the year it was built. An absolute must-see.
I was looking forward to our whole day in the Jewish Quarter to get an education about the Jewish history and experience in Amsterdam. We visited this Synagogue, the Jewish Museum, the Dutch Resistance Museum, the Holocaust museum, the Jewish theatre, and the Holocaust memorial. It was a jam packed day. Of all of these, we felt the most impactful experience, most educational, and most interesting was the Dutch Resistance museum and the Holocaust museum. I am not sure why Rick Steves gave the Portuguese Synagogue two triangles (stars) instead of one star. It was okay, as was the audio guide. Maybe a private tour would have increased the experience to make it more interesting but I'm not sure.
What experience? We booked tickets to visit the Portuguese Synagogue on Sunday, September 7, 2025, and paid for the tickets. When we got to the synagogue, we were denied entrance because a special event was happening. Why were we not not advised of this beforehand? Very bad experience.

As a result, the opening hours may sometimes differ. For this reason, we always recommend('Additional info') checking our own website in advance for the most up-to-date information. Your ticket on that day did still grant access to the Jewish Museum, though we fully understand how disappointing it must have been not to visit the synagogue as planned. We came here with Naomi, our guide with Jewish Amsterdam Tour, and the experience was enlightening and moving. To see that this sacred place was spared in the war, and that it’s still being used today for religious services and milestones, is amazing, and uplifting.
A fascinating destination for Jewish visitors. Not sure how it will resonate with Gentiles. A great window into the history of the Sephardi community in Amsterdam, which is ritually a bit different than most other Jewish communities in the West.
Interesting experience. The ticket gives entrance to both the Portuguese Synagogue and the Jewish museum. If you enjoy history and old buildings, you will appreciate this experience.
