15 Best Day Trips in Europe (From the Continent's Greatest Cities)

The Logic of the European Day Trip

Europe's density of history, beauty, and infrastructure makes it uniquely suited for day trips. High-speed trains have made it trivially easy to leave Paris at 8am and be standing in the gardens of Versailles by 10am.

From Paris

Versailles (45 min by RER C) — The Sun King's palace: 700 rooms, 2,000 windows, 357 mirrors in the Hall of Mirrors, 800-hectare gardens. Book online; queues can be 2+ hours without tickets.

Mont Saint-Michel (3.5 hours) — The tidal island monastery off Normandy's coast. A guided full-day tour includes return travel and a walk around the ramparts.

Loire Valley (1 hour by TGV to Tours) — The châteaux of Chambord, Chenonceau, and Amboise with wine tasting. April–October best.

From Rome

Pompeii & Vesuvius (2.5 hours by train) — The best-preserved Roman city, buried in 79 AD. Combine with a hike up Vesuvius for a full day.

Ostia Antica (45 min) — Rome's ancient port city, larger than Pompeii and far less visited.

From Barcelona

Montserrat (1 hour) — The monastery and mountain. Essential.

Tarragona (1 hour by train) — A Roman amphitheatre on the seafront, a still-standing aqueduct, and excellent seafood.

From Amsterdam

Keukenhof (1 hour by bus) — March to May: 32 hectares of tulips. The world's greatest flower show.

Bruges (2 hours) — Belgium's medieval canal city. Completely photogenic.

Booking Tips

  • Guided day trip minivans (6–14 people) beat large coaches for flexibility.
  • Book train tickets in advance — prices rise significantly closer to travel date.
  • Check opening hours carefully — many historic sites close Mondays.
