Na een korte rit door de Messara vlakte bereikt u Matala. Bekend om de kolonie hippies in de jaren zestig, waar ze leefden in grote gaten gevormd op de berg. De rotsen zijn gaten met een Romeinse begrafenis. In Matala heeft u tijd voor een verfrissende duik in het water, iets eten of gewoon genieten van een drankje op het strand. Dit is de plaats waar Zeus, nadat hij de vorm van een stier had aangenomen, met Europa op zijn rug aan land zwom voordat hij haar naar Gortys sleepte. Zowel de Minoërs als de Romeinen gebruikten de plaats als hun haven. Toch betekent Matala voor de meeste mensen maar één ding: hippies. In de late jaren 1960 - 1970 was dit stadje een kolonie van de “bloemenkinderen”, die leefden in de grotten die vroeger Romeinse graven waren. Er zijn bands uit de Griekse en internationale muziekscene. De toegang tot het gebied is gratis. Het Matala Beach Festival omvat evenementen voor kinderen en volwassenen. De concerten op het strand en de strandfeesten zijn zeker het hoogtepunt en geschikt voor elk publiek. Tijdstippen en looptijden: Je arriveert rond 18.00 uur in Matala zonder drukte en vast te zitten in het verkeer omdat je direct met de bus naar de scène gaat. Dan ben je vrij om de hele omgeving te verkennen. Om middernacht wordt u vriendelijk verzocht terug te komen naar de touringcar om met onvergetelijke herinneringen terug te rijden naar de hotels. Unusual place after more than 40 minutes of walking-sports. Small cozy beach where you can treat yourself to a moisturizing drink while enjoying sunbathing.
Lovely place once we got there but spent 5hrs total on a bus for 3 and half hours of visit. Couldn't go in the sea as wasn't enough time. Would definitely reccomend a visit but unless u like very long bus journeys. Find a different route or tour!! We will definitely not use again!!

Crete is a very large island, and transfer times depend on the pickup location. For guests staying in Malia, the drive to the south can take up to 2.5 hours. A total of 3.5 hours on the bus is not possible with our schedule, as our first entry to Matala is at 8:30 and guests arrive around 11:00. We understand that long distances may feel tiring, but they are unfortunately part of travelling across the island. We always do our best to make the journey as smooth as possible. The trip to Matala was very nice. It went from the north of Crete to the south. The ride goes through the mountains where you could enjoy really beautiful views. Matala is known for its caves where hippies lived in the 60s. Before entering the village, there is an olive tree with faces carved into its trunk. Matala itself consists of taverns, souvenir shops and textile-supplying shops. There is also a beach there, which is very gravelly and studded with stones in the water. The water gets deep very quickly and when you go in and out you sing deep into the gravel. It doesn't take much time to see the place. For us it was very nice and we can recommend this trip.

Thank you for the amazing tour! Very positive experience with plenty of free time in Matala. Everything was fast, on time and very well organized. Bravo to our nice multilingual guides and professional driver.
Due to an error, we were left behind by the bus, but we were brought by car to Matala to compensate for it. We appreciate and thank our guide for her kindness, so we could enjoy the time spent in Matala ( a nice place with a beautiful beach).
Our tour guide, Viola was wonderful. She shared her knowledge of the area and made us feel special. The trip was certainly a highlight of our visit to Crete. The weather was perfect. We enjoyed the beach and the town.
We booked the tour (if you can call it that) in Italian from Italy. Specially chose this one because it was in Italian. We were contacted two days before by email during the night, which was not possible in Italian... On your site there was the possibility to choose the most convenient place to be picked up, and even in this case, the operator forced us to go to another meeting point much further away. Two words in broken English. So also not very understandable, even if the guide was nice. The place is very nice, but it's better to organize on your own, it will cost less and you will certainly have more satisfaction
Loved exploring the caves! The shops were nice and had reasonably priced items. The food spots were so good and the beach was very pretty. It was a perfect amount of time to do everything we wanted there.
Small nice place (nothing to have with the big cities), we went in the evening and it was cool, small square with bars, small alleys with artistic frescoes drawn on the floor. On the side of the small beach small caves carved into the rock. You can also find one of the restaurants overlooking the sea it is very nice. Place where the cool bobo community meets. Nice place to discover if you spend the evening in the area.
