De oudste tempel van Kanchipuram is het meest indrukwekkend, niet vanwege de grootte, maar vanwege het gewicht van de historische aanwezigheid en de ingewikkeldheid van het metselwerk. Net zoveel monument als levende tempel, Kailasanatha is stiller dan andere tempels in de stad, en is zwaar gerestaureerd. Toegewijd aan Shiva, werd het gebouwd in de 8ste eeuw door Pallava-koning Narasimhavarman II (Rajasimha), die ook de Shore Tempel van Mamallapuram creëerde.

Van vijf Shiva-tempels in Zuid-India die zijn geassocieerd met de vijf elementen, is dit 12 hectare grote district het schrijn van de aarde. Je gaat onder de 59 meter hoge, ongeverfde zuid-gopuram in, waarvan het levendige houtsnijwerk in 1509 onder de heerschappij van Vijayanagar werd gebeiteld. Binnen leidt een zuilengalerij links naar de centrale compound, waar Nandi vanaf de rechterkant naar kijkt. Het innerlijke heiligdom (alleen hindoes) bevat een lingam gemaakt van aarde en een spiegelkamer waarvan het centrale Shiva-beeld wordt weerspiegeld in eindeloze herhaling.
Kanchipuram, 80 km ten zuidwesten van Chennai, was de hoofdstad van de Pallava-dynastie in de 6e tot 8e eeuw, toen de Pallavas de grote stenen monumenten van Mamallapuram creëerden. Tegenwoordig is het een typisch hectische moderne Indiase stad, het staat bekend om zijn vele belangrijke en levendige tempels (en hun kleurrijke festivals), sommige dateren uit Pallava, Chola of Vijayanagar tijden. Het staat ook bekend om zijn hoogwaardige zijdesari's, geweven op handweefgetouwen door duizenden families in de stad en nabijgelegen dorpen. Zijde- en sari-winkels liggen aan Gandhi Rd, ten zuidoosten van het centrum, hoewel hun waren over het algemeen niet goedkoper zijn dan in de zijdewinkels van Chennai.

We had a fantastic tour of Kanchipuram starting from Chennai. Tour guide Rajesh did great job explaining the Temple history and mythology. Visited Kanchi Kamakshi temple and Varadaraja Parimal/Lakshmi Narasimha temple ( massive construction with several deities ). Had private pujas n were very satisfied. The other two temples including Kailasanatar and Ekambaranathar temples are beautiful and auspicious as well. Had a great day. After decent lunch visited Silk weavers co-op and were very impressed that their Art of weaving continues on within families. We had purchased Fantastic silk saris with the wholesaler store, very much enjoyed. Worth doing the day tour for those interested in Art/ Archeology and history as well. Heading to Mahablipuram.

A nice private tour day trip visiting 4 temples, guide explained along the way. Visited kanchi sari where they hand weave silk sari. They do try to sell you some at the end but easy to say no. Nice morning tea stop and lunch stop. Guide Rajesh was knowledgeable and friendly and helpful. Accommodating to limited mobility. Great driver. Good pre-trip planning communications.

We highly recommend this tour for anyone who wanted to see the historic temples.First temple we saw having biggest entrance tower.Also visited silk weaving place and heritage temples.
