Ga op een zelfstandige wandeltocht door de rijke geschiedenis van Honolulu. Kamehameha heeft deze dramatische start zeker waargemaakt. Zijn tijdgenoten beschreven hem als een intimiderende krijger die “zich bewoog in een aura van geweld.” Tijdens de jaren 1700 vochten talrijke stamhoofden om de controle over de Hawaïaanse eilanden. OPMERKING : De tour is meer dan 1,6 mijl lang, met meer dan 23 audio verhalen, en duurt ongeveer 1 - 2 uur te voltooien. Nieuw, Levenslang toegang, geen vervaldatum. Dat is de Kawaiaha'o-kerk. Ooit was dit de nationale kerk van het Hawaiiaanse koninkrijk.
Dit museum toont voorwerpen uit de zendingsperiode van Hawaï.
Oorspronkelijk bouwde Kamehameha V Ali'iolani Hale als paleis voor Hawaiiaanse vorsten. Maar koning Kalakaua besloot het om te bouwen tot overheidskantoren.
Koning Kalakaua keerde eind 1881 terug van zijn wereldtournee. Hawaïanen versierden de hele stad en spanden een groots spandoek met 'Welkom thuis' in de haven van Honolulu. Maar terwijl de Hawaïanen de terugkeer van Kalakaua vierden, beraamden anderen zijn ondergang... Herinner je je de Hervormingspartij nog? Dit was de overwegend Amerikaanse politieke partij die na het wederkerigheidsverdrag van 1875 langzaam de controle over de Hawaïaanse politiek overnam.
Dit beeld eert een recentere figuur in de geschiedenis van Hawaï, vertegenwoordiger Patsy Takemoto Mink. Patsy Takemoto was een Japans-Amerikaan van de derde generatie die opgroeide in Hawaï.
Wat zie je als je naar Sky Gate kijkt? Gewoon een verzameling buigzame zwarte buizen? Misschien een simpel spinnenweb? Een driepotig dier? Noguchi zelf omschreef Sky Gate als “een evocatie van de lucht van Hawaï.”
Vóór de bouw van het Capitool gebruikten de Hawaïanen het ‘Iolani-paleis als hun regeringszetel. Je zult het paleis binnenkort zien.
Dit monument eert de mannen en vrouwen die zijn omgekomen bij de aanval op Pearl Harbor op 7 december 1941 – “een datum die in schande zal leven” in de woorden van president Franklin Roosevelt.
Zie je dat herenhuis van twee verdiepingen aan onze rechterkant, een eindje van de weg af? Dat is Washington Place, het voormalige huis van koningin Lili'uokalani!
We staan voor de Iolani-kazerne. Voordat Dole en de Annexation Club hun staatsgreep tegen koningin Lili'uokalani voltooiden, huisvestte de kazerne de Koninklijke Garde van de Koningin.
Voor ons staat Iolani Palace, daterend uit 1879. Dit is het enige koninklijke paleis in de Verenigde Staten!
Naarmate de jaren 1900 vorderden, trok Lili'uokalani zich geleidelijk terug uit het openbare leven. Ze nam een fulltime intrek in haar huis aan Washington Place, waar inheemse Hawaiianen haar voortdurend bezochten. Voor hen is ze nooit opgehouden hun koningin te zijn. En op haar beurt bleef Lili'uokalani van haar volk houden. In haar memoires schreef ze: “Het is voor hen dat ik de laatste druppel van mijn bloed zou geven; het is voor hen dat ik alles wat mij toebehoort, zou uitgeven, ja nog steeds uitgeef.”

Nice walking tour. The app worked great and the history was very interesting. It got very hot in the afternoon so we ducked into buildings. Recommend to go in the morning while its cooler

That finding the app to get the audio was so hard, that I stopped trying and we just walked around. Need to make it easier for those who not techie.

It was very educational and interesting. The narrator included srltories about the history of the sites we saw and made the people & places come alive. The walking directions were very explicit and precise so I never worried we were taking a wrong turn.

Our guide was very punctual. He was very knowledgeable about key sites and attractions not to mention hilarious and charismatic. If you’re going Pearl Harbour you are not allowed any bags, only items small enough to fit in your pocket. Once you get to Pearl Harbour you’re left to your own devices to choose what you want to see. The USS Arizona memorial was included in the ticket. Loved the experience, highly recommend.
