Ervaar het historische stadscentrum van Wittenberg met zijn kasteelkerk en de beroemde deur waar Martin Luther zijn 95 stellingen spijkerde. Slenter door de straten en volg de voetsporen van Martin Luther en zijn collega's. Je zou nooit raden dat zijn kleine, rustige stadje het centrum was van een van de bekendste religieuze revoluties ter wereld. De gebeurtenissen die hier in de 16e eeuw plaatsvonden, veranderden de grondslagen van de christenheid. Het was hier waar Maarten Luther woonde en predikte, en op 31 oktober 1517 spijkerde hij zijn 95 stellingen aan de deur van de kasteelkerk. De protestantse Reformatie was begonnen. Ook wel het "Rome van de protestanten" genoemd, werden in 1996 veel Luther-herdenkingsplaatsen toegevoegd aan de UNESCO-werelderfgoedlijst.

Bekijk Luther's Residence, een groot klooster dat de hervormer Martin Luther als huis gebruikte. Bezoek het marktplein van Wittenberg, gedomineerd door het stadhuis en de torens van de stadskerk. Kijk eens naar het Luther Memorial. Achter de markt staat een oude kerk genaamd Stadtkirche, waar Luther predikte en trouwde met Katharina von Bora. Passeer Castle Church, de beroemde kerk waar Maarten Luther zijn 95 stellingen aan de deur spijkerde. Luther hield enkele van zijn preken in deze kerk en ligt nu begraven net onder de preekstoel. Een ander belangrijk herkenningspunt is Luther's Oak, waar Luthers aanhangers in 1520 een stapel geschriften met leerstellingen van de kerk verbrandden. In 1830 werd een eik geplant op de plek waar dit alles zou hebben plaatsgevonden. We eindigen onze tour met de Universiteit van Wittenberg, waar je nog steeds delen van de structuur kunt zien die dateren uit de zestiende eeuw. Luther werkte zelf binnen deze muren en citaten van hem hangen op de muren in de entreehal.

I knew nothing about Wittenberg and come to find out it is mainly one street. But, that one street has so much history. It is a walking tour so be prepared, but each stop is a new adventure into the history of Lutheranism and of the town. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our questions. This tour is worth the price if you are a history buff like I am. You will not be disappointed.
